Mark GMontana M1999 Scope Mount ???
Hey guys I just got my M1999 back from McMillian yesterday. I took it to my smith today to have the scope mounted. I check the scope itself it was in good position, but when I got it home I notice that the mounts fit like crap. I call the smith and told him I would be back tomorrow, as that is not acceptable.
The mounts come into the ejector space a good 1/2" or so on the front side and 1/4" on the rear.
I am looking at the lastest "Petersens Hunting" rag, as I type (Oct. 05 page 34) There is an article by Wayne Van Zwoll on a Montana Serengeti combo. (nice rig if your into wood)
The article doesn't mention the mounts but does anyone know what they are???
What are you other M1999 shooters using??
Montana Rifleman's web site says that they "maintained the M70 scope geometry" so I asked the smith for standard Leupold M70 Mounts and rings. I never saw the box so I am not sure if that is what I got or not.....

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, Mark G

jbmichI have a set of Burris bases on mine and they fit great. 'They have the dove tail in front and the dbl. windage screw in the rear.
I called Montana and they are the ones they suggested.

Chuck NelsonMark, those mounts pictured in Wayne's article are Leupold's Dual Dovetail mounts.

dempseySounds like maybe a extension base was used in the front. The pic posted has a normal base and an extension ring.

Recoil RobHas anyone tried theM70 Warne Maxima mounts for a MRC1999? How do they fit?

tiggertateThere may be difference in the hole location on short and long MRCs. I bought a set of custom mounts made when the long action first came out and the rear mount extends into the port on my short action. I don't have a long one to compare and prove the theory, though.

<allen day>Mark, Chuck always has a great eye for detail, and he's right, those are Leupold Dual-Dovetails.
They are excellent mounts, no question about it, but I will caution you about just one thing: Make very sure that the scope mounting holes in the receiver lines up very closely with the centerline of the bore. It's not at all unusual for those holes to be pointing a few degrees off-center, and if that's the case, you may have to over-compensate by using too much of your scope's internal adjustment range, and without knowing it, create your own parallax problem that causes mysterious bullet-placement problems downrange. This won't manifest itself at 100 yds., but rather 200 yds. and beyond.
This is why so many good scopemounting systems provide windage screws, and it's also what Dual-Dovtails don't work for every rifle, at least not without some work.........

MKane160Good points, Allen. My M1999 wears double dovetail Burris mounts with Burris Signature rings. With the inserts in the rings, you can 1) adjust for screwholes not drilled in line with the bore, and 2) not leave ringmarks on your scope. They look great and have not moved a millimeter on my .375 Taylor. BTW, my gunsmith said the first M1999 he saw had base holes drilled off center. He was much happier with my action....

I've got them on both mine, one with Leupold QRW rings and the other with Burris Zee Signature rings. I like the latter better.

But the mounts themselves are OK, they don't cover the ejection port?
Thanks, Rob

Bob338Nope, nowhere near, two piece Weaver-style bases, a bit ugly but strong and functional.

rootbeerFjold,
True, Near Mfg. doesn't post prices because I assume they would fluctuate with the exchange rates between the various countries with which they do business. One price today may not be the going price next week, so it's easier to just get the exchange rate the day you order and go with that. I paid $165 for my 25 moa lefthand Winchester long base; Brownell's sells the righties only for $175 plus that $9 handling charge.
One disappointment, though... Near generally doesn't produce the lefties unless they get an order for 100 of them. Mine was made for a guy's custom rig and he ended up not using it. Near remembered making it and contacted the man, who then sent it to me. It was two months gone by before I heard from Near to pay for it, so I did and I'm the proud owner of one lefty base in stainless. My gun is supposed to be done soon; pics will be posted if someone will do it for me.

FjoldThere's a link on the MRC site to Ken Farrel's site. He has the 0-25 MOA scope mounts for $72.50
