mrbofusMounting scope on a Win Pre-64 270 ?
Greetings,
Looking for a little advise here, I have aquired a 1951 Win Mod 70 270 featherlite I believe. This is an open sight rifle / never had a scope mounted on it. I would like to scope it but can not clear the rear spring sight and elevator with Med rings and a 42mm scope. Can the rear spring sight be removed easily or suggestions on mounts?
Any advise appreciated.
Thanks

dpcdWhat base are you using; get higher rings, and yes you can remove the rear sight. You have a Featherweight. If it has the featherweight barrel.

mrbofusSorry I meant featherweight. Leupold mounts.

dpcdDrift the rear sight out with a brass drift toward the right; and DON"T lose it; those are worth money.

AFRICAN LEADWOODMount a scope that does not require removing the rear sight, is my advice. I've bought numerous rifles secondhand without the rear sight or sight blades. They always get lost it seems. And they look unfinished.
Look at shorter tubes and smaller objectives or straight tubes. How about 2-7x28 vx2 or 3-9x33. Fixed 6x36 etc. 2.5-8x36 and so on...
But hey... it's your rifle!

boliepI thought all of the pre 64 featherweights came with the rear sight that folded over.

RCflashMy pre-64 Model 70 [not a featherweight] has the folddown rear sight. 270 Win.
I mounted a Leupold Vari-X II 2 x 7 on it using Control mounts, with the medium height rings. That was about 25 years ago.
Works just fine. There are plenty of options for you.

mrbofussorry in not getting back sooner. This rifle isnt a featherweight, sorry my .06 from my father is. This .270 does have the rear spring sight and I am afraid that it will take more pressure / force to remove the sight than I am willing to give it. I may take it to my smith before I screw it up. I still plan to scope it.
Thanks for the ideas and suggestions.
