MRC Action Question

I have a MRC barreled action in 270WSM.Does anyone know if the contours are the same as a Model 70????? I can pick up a stock for a Short action Winchester reasonable and do not care if it is a drop in fit,but close. Thanx ahead OB

If it came from MRC with the barrel already on it and you are the original owner, you should have that information in your invoice. If not, they should be able to tell you based upon the serial number of the completed action. If all else fails, then it's time to whip out the tape measure and the digital calipers...

kinda close, but not.....

I put mine in McMillan and I was less than pleased.

Mine is a short action in 6.5x55

I was planning on putting it in a Boyds JRS for Short action Win.They dont make a stock for the MRC anymore.I got the rifle in a Trade and it has a knockout piece of Walnut ,that I would prefer to not hunt with.
How does yours shoot?????? Thanx OB

Mine is a long magnum, 29-inch Krieger, 300WSM in a 1:10 twist and it shoots just an RCH over a quarter-minute if I don't have my head up my clinton that day. I use garden-variety Winchester brass from the sportin' goods store, Sierra MatchKings in the180-grain flavor and 65 grains of RL-22 or H4831SC. My best ever is five rounds at 100 yards into .254 inches, center-to-center. My worst will remain a state secret...

Just my opinion.I think Krieger makes one of the finest barrels out there.You kind of expect that kind of performance from them!!!!!

Olbiker,

There is an overhang in front of the recoil lug that is not there in a M70 which is not a huge problem However, I think it is the inletting for the floorplate that will be quite different and not easy to fix.

I did my two MRC 1999 SA's in .308 and bought two Winchester SA takeoff s for them, If I remember correctly the front ring is a bit longer that the M70 so I just cut away for that. The triggerplate has some different contours so I had to fill them with epoxy. I painted the stocks so it looked fine.

I was going to say it was really no big deal if working in synthetics, but the trigger plate will pose a problem with a wood stock. But I just looked back at a thread I wrote when I was doing it and I guess at the time I thought it was a PIA. The bolt handle slot will need some work also.

If you are handy doing the bedding you can make it work. Easier on a glass stock then you can add and chop as needed and repaint.
They will not interchange with a Win 70

I have just finished taking maybe two dozen pictures of my rifle. I will send them to Mark for posting sometime later today. I have to go to town soon and will be out all afternoon. I trust Mark will choose the ones he thinks best show the rifle and provide those who are thinking about building an MRC what they might want to see in a finished project. Barrel is a custom-contoured Krieger MTU #10, 29 inches long with ten flutes. Caliber is SAAMI 300WSM with a 1:10 twist. Breech is 1.25 inches in diameter by 4 inches long to allow for a possible chambering to a different caliber at some future date. Muzzle brake is a Shrewd #4; nominal diameter of 1 inch unmachined. Muzzle diameter is .960 inches. Stock is a Richards Micro-fit Thumbhole Target. Beavertail requires a 3-inch bag. Finish is just rubbed oil. Required many hours of handwork and mucho dinero to finish. I recommend no one use a Richards. In my opinion, they are junk. There is too much extra wood on the stocks and the inletting is oversized and out of alignment with the centerline of the stock. Just about anybody else's stock would be better. There are two recoil reducers in the butt. One is a mercury tube for shotguns; the other is a Hiram's LH (no longer made) thing with some sort of hydraulic dampening in it. Rifle weighs 19 pounds. Recoil is very manageable; feels like a 243Win. Remove the brake and the rifle will jump six inches off the front bag as well as kick you a good one...

Scope base is a Near Manufacturing Picatinny rail with 25 moa slope. LH bases from Near are rare as hen's teeth; they make 100:1 in RH. I was very lucky to get this one from a man in Phoenix who had it left over from an abandoned project. Trigger is stock MRC, adjusted to 1.5 pounds; lets off crisp and clean. Scope is a 10-40X by 56mm Vector Optics of the first focal-plane variety. Not a Schmidt-Bender, but then I ain't no David Tubb, either. I have next to zero real training as a shooter. It's clear enough and seems to hold up to recoil well. It works for me. Cost about 400 bucks...

Load is 65.0 grains of H4831SC or 65.0 grains of RL-22 under a 180-grain Sierra MatchKing HPBT. Loads chrono out to just a bit above 2900 fps. I weigh my bullets to .1 grain tolerance, trim the mep-lats and full-prep the cases, right down to chamfering the inside of the flash hole on the inside the case. Cases are sorted to five grains tolerance. I use garden-variety Winchester brass and any maker's magnum primers I can pick up at the sportin' goods store. My dies are standard RCBS Type A-- nothing special. Rounds are measured to 1/1000 tolerance in the head-to-ogive measurement and bullets are seated .020 inches off the lands. My best five-shot cluster to date is .254 inches from 100 yards. I need to practice more. I love shooting this gun. It's a dream come true. The action was ordered on April 23, 2003; delivered to my gunsmith on November 15, 2004 and I had the rifle in my hands on October 22, 2005. That's one day short of 2-1/2 years. What a long, strange trip it's been...

Their contours are a cross between a Douglas & Shilen, some might even say similar to a Ruger. But homebrewer is correct, call them up and they should be able to pull out the paperwork, or if you got an invoice it should be listed there. Most of the stock companies that are doing work for them know their contours but if it is just an aftermarket Winchester stock you'll probably have to do some inletting.
