Winchester Pre 64 M70 - Need an Original Rear sight
I recently aquired a pre-64 (1953), M-70, in 300 H & H which unfortunately does not have the original rear sight. I want to restore this gem in the rough to it's original state. Although, I have been at a loss to find a source for this sight.

If you know of a source or have one please let me know.

I will send you an e-mail tomarrow if I have an extra. I believe they were a fold down leaf. Is that correct? I know I have several but don't remember if they were fold down or not after the war.

Joe,

Give us the approximate but not exact serial number and perhaps we will come up with a picture.

Mine has the folding sight but its a very late pre 64.

This won't give you an exact match, but my pre-64 M70's rear sight looks a lot like the one used on the Ruger 10/22.

The earlier M70's had a Lyman 22G? rear sight. At some point later they came with a folding rear sight which sat on the barrel dovetail.

Here is one supposedly off a 1953 standard model. Rear Sight.

Thanks Glen. I can't tell from the photo if it is fold down or not. Let's see if the picture will come up here.

Pending Frank's search, I will bid on the one on ebay if it is the correct one for my rifle. I was told this rifle was 1953, but need to verify the SN.

According to Whitaker's The Model 70 Winchester 1937-1964, and I quote, " Several different rear sights were fitted to the Model 70. At various times the barrel-mounted rear sights were the Winchester No. 22G or the 22. The Lymans 22B, 16B and No. 6 were also untilized on later units. ..... The open sporting sights, mounted on the barrel, were equipped with notched elevators. .. . shows three types of elevators.
Somtime during the late 1950's, the Lyman #6 "folding leaf" rear sight became the "Standard" unit, although the original type could still be had on special order. ... In general, the changeover to the folding leaf rear sight began with the changeover from the strainght-comb stock to the Monte-Carlo variety."

He doesn't list serial numbers in either test or pictures on this issue. From my experience and and what is available at the present, I would have to agree with his general statements.
He also says the same applies to featherweights.

Maybe this is helpful, maybe not.

According to Armscollectors.Com

"The year of manufacture for serial number 245555 is 1953."

I had to insert all the digits so I just carried the last one through. You can go to the web page and put in your actual serial number.

I think I have one of the Lyman rear sights that I bought several years ago for the same gun. I bought two and think I still have one in the package... I'll see if I can find it...

I'll check.

Let me know if it is the same for the period and I will gladly buy it from you. Thanks, MJ

Sorry about the lateness of the hour but I just got in.
I found four that are complete. Two are Lymans, one a Win chester but I don't have it marked as to year and one unknown.
The guaranteed 1950's I have is missing the elevation insert.

The two on the left are Lyman's, the third has an "R" stamped on the edge and four is not marked but I am preeeeeeety sure it came from a 50's Win. 64.

I believe the one on the right is correct.

Frank; You are a good friend. The forth appears to have been fitted and may not work, but to assist in your kind efforts, what would you want for the lott, unless you only care to part with one or two?

Please send me your mailing information. Lets see if it will work for you. I will part with the one you can use. I have actually been putting them back on to old rifles I had removed them from when I put scopes on.
