Big Green Mauser?
Has anyone else heard of this? I wonder when we'll be seeing them on the market?

I got my recent Jerry’s Sporting Goods dealer catalog and they have them listed. Whether or not they are in stock I don’t know.

This news has sort of leaked out, and I expect Big Green will disclose all at the SHOT Show next month (along with their new M700 trigger).

Wonder what is going to be on the side? Big Green, Remington? I vote for nothing at all.

So Charles Daly is now the purveyor of only cheap Filipino and Turk crap?

Their Sabatti made over/unders were actually decent guns.....

Anyway, If Remington puts a matte-blued Zastava action in their CDL stock, they might have a nice rifle that I would be interested in buying.

Not so fast HP.

I've actually seen some decent shotguns coming out of Turkey. The Turks seem to be getting better and better at making them as time goes on. They're a pretty good value, I'd say.

As to the M798 Remington - I'd buy one or two myself if this move improves their quality. I further hope, that if it does, there'll be action available to play with.

I've owned a few of the 7MS models over the years, and have been impressed with the craftsmanship of the their Custom Shop. Unfortunately, they've had to work with piss-poor designs, and there is only so much perfume that you can put on a pig.

The 798 might be just the thing to give Remington back their pre-war respect. Hopefully they will just import the Zastava actions, leaving the fit and finish of complete rifles to their Custom Shop.

I don't know Kurt, that piss-poor design is good enough for the Army and Marine Corps sniper rifles.

I would much rather see Remington re-introduce the model 30 and/or the model 720 instead of some cheap Mauser copy.

And that “piss-poor“ 700 action dominated BR matches for allot of years, and has only recently been replaced by specific purpose custom made actions...not by Mausers or Winchesters!

It has also served as the Marine Corps sniper rifle since 1966...which I believe is the longest continuous service of any individual weapon in our military, except for the M16.

Ain't gonna happen. The cost cutters at Remington now appear to have turned the company into more and more of an importer and less and less of a manufacturer since every single new rifle since the M700 (M710, M597, M504) has failed to set the world on fire.

WTF were they thinking with the 710? bewildered

With everybody under the sun making some sort of Remington 700 tubeular lazy ass action. It could be that big green is going to make a Mauser, hell they sell less than 20,000 700s a year now, in the 1970's the sold 45,000 to 50,000 700s. In other words why not make 20,000 big green mausers at $2000.00 each, and sell them all, instead of 20,000 700s at $600.00 each that nobody is interested in. Modern shooters don't want a bone stock factory Rem 700, that gun is for the middle class and the middle class doesn't hunt anymore. The middle class is to busy with soccer games and games that involve balls, balls for the most part are cheap. After the mortgage, two car payments credit cards and 700 diapers a month at a buck a piece. The middle class is broke, right where uncle sam wants him, because a man that is broke is controllable. This country is going to be like Mexico before too long. There are two types of poeple there. Super wealthy and Super un-wealthy and the latter still hunts with a spear because spears are damn near free and the ammo for spear is super cheap.

Yes, and besides, the Turks have some of the world's best wood to put on them!!

A lot of middle class shooters do not hunt, but they do shoot. They just don't shoot the kind of guns that most people here prefer, or that Remington makes.

And for clarification, Remington isn't going to make anything Mauser-like. They are going to have someone else make it and engrave "Remington" on it.

The rest of the rant makes no sense.

The models shown in the catalog all come with Blued steel, brown laminated stocks, and hinged floorplates.

It also shows a bunch of shotguns (over/unders, doubles, single shots, one auto loader)... single shot rifles, side by side rifles, and over/under combo’s...as well as one bolt action rim fire.

Interesting. But not if those are dealer prices, which means that retail prices will be at least 10% higher.

They are now in CZ 550 territory.

Hey Rick, Do they have a price on that SXS .45-70 everybody wants but can't get?

Thanks,
Terry

Terry,

I once again have to admit to my ignorance (damn that happens allot!)...I have no idea what an SXS 45-70 is.

Who makes it? The catalog is divided into manufacturers.
27 January 2006, 02:51
TC1
It's a Remington product sold under the Sparton banner name. It's a side by side double rifle chambered in .45-70 and .30-06 I think suggested retail is about $650.00.

Thanks for looking.
Terry

Rick,

Thanks for the reply. That's odd. Zastava's making them in LH for Daly. Can't be any harder to import them with the bolt on the other side, can it?

Maybe they don't stack well in the embark boxes?
