MKane160Large ring to small ring conversion
To the professional gunsmiths here:
Can a large ring 98, in this case a VZ-24, have the front ring ground to small ring dimensions? Or do you just end up with the same thin front ring problems that the Kar98 apparently has? Will the better metalurgy of the VZ allow this to be a safe conversion for, say, a .308 class cartridge?

You just end up with the same thin front ring problems that the Kar98 has. Why, because that's exactly what the Prussians did way back when.

vapodogMausers are mostly available in large ring and small ring....further in large barrel thread and small barrel thread.....
It's fairly documented that one should avoid making a small ring with a large barrel thread. This is what you'd have by grinding a VZ-24 to small ring.
I'm currently playing with several K Kales Turks that are large ring and small barrel thread and this is a real possibility.
They have a rather large diameter thread relief in the rear of the barrel thread and I haven't measured this yet....if it's smaller than the bolt lug diameter then this action should be able to be ground to small ring.
Some here have done it and others have warned against it but assuming the barrel thread relief isn't too large I'm going to have a go at it.
I have five of them.....want one?
I'm sending all the receivers to PacMet for heat treating Monday!

GSP7I dont realy see the point of Grinding a large ring into a small ring. Seems like a getting abit carryed away.
Now if it was a old '32 or '33 ford coupe body I could see chopping the top and putting a big block chevy in it.

Strictly weight reduction.....not much....a few ounces at most, nothing more as far as I can see. I add an annodized aluminum bottom metal to mine to further cut weight. (P A W S from Brownells)
