Big Wonderful WyomingGrinding on a 700 mag for clearance?
I switched out the cheap plastic stock for a Magpul one, and then found a Greybull Precision stock I liked more.
I can't screw the bottom metal into the action on the Greybull as the magazine is binding it and causing it to sit proud.
Can I grind it or it there some kind of critical reason I can't?

Big Wonderful WyomingIs a ADL magazine taller than a BDL magazine?
It seems like I had to grind off 1/2 an inch.

Yes. ADL mag boxes are taller.

Big Wonderful WyomingI am going to finish it up tonight. The magazine has no play in it, I have heard that it can cause accuracy issues.
Should I grind the ear off the back where the ADL style magazine attaches?
Or should I use the ear and screw?

farbedoSince you converted to BDL, you can remove the tab for the screw. The magazine should be just slightly loose when the whole thing is together. It might rattle when empty, which is fine. The cartridges will stop the rattle when it is loaded.
Most folks that have issues with accuracy don't get the magazine sitting in the track on the bottom metal, and bind it when they snug the screws down.

Big Wonderful WyomingI dug around in my box of 700 parts and found a proper BDL magazine, but I still had to grind on it to remove contact.
They are dramatically shorter.
I just bedded it, we'll see how it goes. It is a factory 700 ADL Varmint in 308 with the camo plastic stock.
I bedded it to a 2nd hand Greybull precision stock I bought off of Ebay.
Actually ended up with 2 of them. For $475 shipped together, for both stocks.
Considering a Bell and Carlson is $300-500 and a HS Precision is 350-800, McMillan and Manners regularly are $500-1300. It was a good deal.

hogfarmerBWW, is your stock a Grayboe? If so, how do you like it? I have some McMillans and a Manners which I like but the Grayboe has an attractive price, but I want to know what the quality is like. Sorry for the thread hijacking.

Big Wonderful WyomingNo it is a Bell and Carlson Greybull Precision stock.
It was gunsmith that was originally part of the Best of the West crew in the pre-Gunwerks days before they parted ways.
I have never seen or touched a Grayboe.
