Reshaping a Medalist stock
Has anyone reshaped a BC medalist stock, in particular the wrist. I'd like to narrow the wrist on mine but would like to hear from anyone who has messed about with them. I'd like to get it closer a factory Winchester feel as it's kinda chunky from the factory.

Thanks.

Thanks Duane,

I have some stuff to do next week in your neck of the woods so I'll bring it and my thinking cap for the 'glitches!" ha!

From Duane's response I am guessing that he assumed that you were talking about a wood stock.

I would be real careful, I am not positive, but I believe the wrist of the medalist is hollow, or filled with a "filler" material. Breaking through would really ruin your day.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

Something tells me to be sure to leave with all your fingers. I recall one of Duane's secret tools on the scholarship rifle thread used to rough shape the stock. I hope one day to have the skill and courage to remove bulk wood that fast.

Jason thanks for that tip. I hadn't thought about it being a "shell" but I guess that makes sense.

Ha!

I'll still stop by and look at the glitches anyhow and see how the other project is going...…didn't think the stock would make it past the force-field at the gate anyway! Last one had to get snuck in by the UPS guy!

BC confirmed Jason's thoughts, will be left as is, too much work!

It can be done, but as already mentioned one thing leads to another. Because the medalist is a solid fill with a hard shell, once you cut it down, the hard shell needs to be replaced. It is real similar to repairing a fiberglass boat or a fender from a corvette. The real problem is the "another". Every other aspect of the butt stock is now out of balanced and will need to be resized in proportion to the wrist. A conservative guess on the cost of the repair is that it will be cheaper/equal $$ to find a different brand of stock that already has the wrist diameter you prefer.

DuaneinND: Yep. BC said I would have to epoxy it back up after I went through the shell, I'm not that ambitious. I'll have to look at McMIllan or HS for the 338 I'm putting together.

I wouldn't recommend it. Once you go through the shell all strength is lost. Rebuilding with Fiberglas would be way more work than worth and getting a rebuild strong enough...just thinking about makes me shake my head "no".

John,

YEah, based on what I've learned, I'll stick with it and just explore a different stock for the next go-round. I just happen to like a small wrist.

Thanks for the advice!

Take a look at the stocks from High Tech; they're much smaller through the wrist tha the Medalist, but don't have the aluminum bedding block.
