VZ24 or Winchester 9.3*62?
I have the choice of a new model CRF model 70 30-06 or a VZ24 with 1909 bottom metal to convert to 9.3x62.

I figure it comes down to money - 500 for a rebarrel or 1000+ for the VZ. Anything I am missing or not thinking of?

Also which length and diameter barrel looks right for a 9.3

Thanks, John

IMO the VZ-24 will not be a better action than the classic M-70 and will cost a lot more to get it there.

Add a #3 contour to the M-70 and don't look back.

Barrel length is a personal preference thing much more so than a performance thing. Pick the length that you like!

I like short ones.....others like long ones....it's your money....pick it the way you like it.

I went the Winchester route. 22" Walther barrel in Wichester factory sporter contour.

The 70 would probably be faster and cheaper but a metric cartridge deserves a European action.

I think it is a law or something! Wink

Mine is a Win Model 54 and is very slick. However, there is some merit to the metric=Mauser argument. Is there $500+ of merit?

That answer is one that has to come from you.

The M70 is a classic in any chambering.

That is a logical statement!

Make mine a Mauser or make it a 35 Whelen for the M70.

The 9.3 is good and the M70 is good, just not together. Just like English peas are good and ice cream is good, just not in the same bowl Big Grin

Do what you want. There is a guy here named KurtC that did a 9.3X62 on a M70 once. After he decided he didn't like it, I think it only took about a year or two to sell the rifle.

Best of luck,
Terry

Every bolt action rifle is a derivative of a Mauser 98. The VZ-24 is no closer to an original 1898 Mauser than a M70 Classic.

It wasn't me. I don't have much use for the M70 in any flavor. That apple fell too far from the tree. Wink

My bad, sorry about that.

M98 = 9.3X62
M70 = 35 Whelan or 338-06

Birds of a feather flock together.

This is silly. If you want a 9,3x62 you can get there with either action and have a very nice rifle.

I have a Pre-64 M70 in 338 WM and an M70 SS Classic in .375 H&H as well as a CZ 550 and a VZ.24 in 9,3x62 (BTW you don't have to change the bottom metal if cheap is the goal). Love'm all!
