Rechamber Question
Could an Interarms mark x 30-06 be rechambered to 300H&H?

With enough time and money anything can be done. The problem with that project is that the boltface, magazine and bolt throw are all too small for the longer and wider .300.

Since you have a good rifle already just shop for a .300 magnum made up as is.

Also the .300 H&H is not that good a design for reloading and not many factory loads are made.

It was replaced long ago by the .300 WM and the .300 Weatherby and now by the .300 WSM.

Yes it can. Of course the bolt face will need to be opened up, possibly the rails adjusted & lengthen the magazine a bit.

Replaced long ago? Really? A cartridge designed for low pressure and easy extraction, at home in a CRF rifle.

I would strongly consider the change if I were you. I've only seen pics of Mk X actions -- do they have a lip on the back of the mag box that protrudes up into the feed port? If not, you could move the back wall a little bit further back, and thin the front as much as possible with a file / Dremel.

I'm measuring a standard military box right now -- if you move the back wall back by it's own thickness (.120) and thin the front from .080 to .040, you would gain .160" This would give you a mag length of 3.460. If you took it one step further, cutting off the front and welding on a bowed piece of sheet metal, you could easily gain the extra .140" I suspect a lot of loads would fit in the 3.460" box though.

Good luck.

The .300 H&H is a high pressure cartridge and not a low pressure cartridge. It's set at 54,000 just like some others.

Nobody chambers it anymore except for special runs. Now if it turns out that some significant company chambers for it and I am wrong my point is still valid as the .300 WM, Weatherby's .300 and the .300 WSM have cleaned it's clock. For that matter the 30/06 cleaned it's clock. The .300 H&H never sold well anyway.

What more do you need to know? That it's no good for reloading!

I would have to disagree. I've been reloading for my Win. 300H&H for about a year now and have found now problems. In fact I'm looking for another one for that very reason. It'll be for my dad to use, that way I don't new dies or brass. I can load the same round for both of us instead of a 300H&H for me and a 30-06 for him.

Mark,

The .300 H&H does not have enough of a shoulder to headspace on. Even if you make cases from 375 H&H brass, which I suggest, case life will be short. That and the fact that I can get the same ballistics out of a short action .300 WSM and not have to deal with the fact that belted cases were not designed to be reloaded make the choice clear.

However some are buying new 45/70's! So it does not have to make sense.

Savage99,

Your right it headspaces on the BELT not on the shoulder. Good luck with your WSM. As for me I've heard of to many feeding problems to buy one and you don't have feeding problems with a 300H&H. But thats what I like, taking old "out dated" calibers and hunting with them. You know what they still work.

Savage99,

You're losing credibility. Elaborate a little about how belted cases were not designed to be reloaded??? Are you serious?

The interarms will take the 300 HH, with minimal problems. Any gunsmith can do this for you, and should be fair reasonable EXCEPT the magizine,

I would recommend a 300 winchester, as you can use the same bottom metal, and not get into what could be an expensive deal...

300 HH is chambered, today, by nearly every body.. and it is what the belt was designed for. I have seen 10s of reloads on them.

rechamber and bolt face, about ~100
feeding? call it 50, as it's pretty easy
mag? who knows.
