Winchester Model 12 - Forearm Removal
Ladies and Gentlemen:
I did a search here, but no luck.
I have a 1957 Winchester Model 12. How do you remove the forearm? I'm stymied.
Sincerely,
Chris Bemis

D HumbargerThe forearm is held in place by the ring on the front end. There are slots on either side for a spanner wrench.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

WestpacFWIW, if you are going to strip it beyond the wooden forearm, you will need to remove that action slide cap which holds the forearm, before you can even separate the action slide from the magazine tube. The cap slips off the front of the magazine tube and the action slide slips off the rear.
The spanner wrench has to straddle the magazine tube in order to remove the cap. If you need a picture of the tool I use let me know and I will post it.

Dear Westpac:
Thank you. I'd love to see a photograph of your spanner wrench. Who sells one? I want to refinish the forearm.
By the way, I tore down the rest of the shotgun, but not the forearm.
Dear D Humbarger:
Thank you for your reply.
Sincerely,

WestpacI made this one 30 years or so ago. You just can't buy tools as fine as these.

The gap is 1" wide X .550 deep
Outside to outside 'hooks' measure 1.700"

Duane WiebeAn old gunsmith that worked part time for Bruce Stevens, in Pleasant Hill, CA made one from a crescent wrench...that way he could handle anything from 410's to 12 ga
Gentlemen:
Thank you for your knowledge and advice.
Someone has offered to lend me the correct spanner.
Sincerely,
