Of all the CRF actions; win., mauser, cz, ruger MKII, custom, etc., which is the lightest to heaviest in that order? Thanks.

I refer to Stuart Otteson's 2 volume set _The Bolt Action Rifle_ and literature from Royal Arms International, who sold the BBK-02 Magnum Mauser Action back in the early 1990's.

I also refer to the CZ 550 Magnum action which I have at hand, about to be turned into a 375 RUM. My scales show this action to weigh 54 oz. It is the 375 H&H bolt face. I also refer to the Ruger Mark II Model 77 Magnum action I have at hand.

A list of some action weights in ounces:

Mauser Model 98 (standard): 45.2

Winchester Pre-64 Model 70: 45.5

Oberndorf Magnum Mauser : 54.0

CZ 550 Magnum : 54.0

BRNO ZKK 602 : 56.0

BBK-02 Magnum Mauser : 52.5

Ruger 77 (Old model short
magnum with alloy floor
Plate and trigger guard. The Mark II with steel trigger guard and alloy floor plate would bring the weight up a few ounces. I don't have one handy to weigh.) : 40.8

Ruger 77 Magnum Mark II
(without the forearm
recoil plate) : 52.5
(with recoil plate) : 57.0

A Ruger 77 MkII short magnum with steel floor plate, an opened up Mauser 98 (including the Whitworth MkX), and both Pre-64 and Classic Winchester M 70's would all be in the sub 48 oz. or 3 pounds range.

All the true magnum actions come out close to 3.5 lbs, close to 56 oz.

The stock material needed to house the true magnums is only a few ounces extra.

If you can build a 7 # 416 Remington on a Winchester Model 70, then you can build an 8 # 416 Rigby on a true magnum Mauser action. That is plenty light enough for either, sans scope and ammo.

So, does anyone have any Dakota 76 actions lying around to weigh for us? I don't have the info on these. I believe their true magnum action has a larger diameter bolt than most others.
How about the Johansen?
Granite Mountain?
Wells?
Brevex?
All of these go beyond my simple means.
Could someone enlighten us on this weighty matter?

You are welcome. I hope someone else will reveal the secrets of how much the modern high dollar actions weigh.
I feel that the best way to go is to get your smith to blueprint one of the following:

short magnum: Ruger Mark II Model 77
H&H length : Winchester Model 70 Classic
Rigby length: CZ 550 Magnum

Anything bigger would go in a double rifle or be relegated to the curio corner.

Of course, those with money to burn can do as they please in this regard. The only advantage I see to the Dakota action is its greater bolt diameter. However, I certainly don't need it since I would not consider using any case head bigger in diameter than the 416 Rigby/460 Weatherby.

A 500 Nitro Express 3" double rifle makes perfect sense to me, however.

Hey! bringing this thread back makes me look pretty ignorant!

I aRe A Berry, and I have learned that the Dakota 76 African bolt body diameter is a mere 0.700" like most others, standard and magnum.
The weight is about the same as other Rigby-sized actions.
Sorry I did not weigh it when it was being rebarreled from .395 Tatanka to 404 RIP.

Granite Mountain has both a 0.700" and a .750" bolt diameter, and I cannot keep up with the RMC.
Does the RMC PH action have a 0.800" bolt diameter, and considerable weight?

Johannsen is the Prechtl/Golmatic action, similar to the original Oberndorf Mag Mauser, similar to the French Brevex ... blah blah blah ...

They must have put their actions on a diet. I get:

MRC BSRS (Short, stainless, .308 bolt face) 45.8 oz.

MRC CCRM-L (Long, Chrome-moly, .375 bolt face) 46.7 oz.

The short is a very early "charter" and the long is from just after that offering ended. And yeh, I'm on the hook for several of the PH actions.

(As an aside, my scale is certified for trade at 0.05 oz.)
