Half Octagon Barrel-Who does them?
With Mark Stratton way behind because of unforseen things, I need somebody to make a half octagon barrel for me. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Wind River Octagon - Google it.

They have light octagon, heavy octagon, and custom octagon to round profiles in the custom shop. I think you may be able to take one of the heavy ones and have someone taper it to round.

Price is right.

Yes mine was a Wind River. It was a full octagon and I had a smith put it in a lathe and turn it half round. I can't tell you how it shoots yet though it is still getting a piece of English Walnut wrapped around it.

Here is a pic. and NO the barrel is NOT bent!

Badger Barrels also does some very good octogon and half octogon barrels. I have one of their top of the line barrels in 30 cal 1-10twist. It is a full octogon 31" long. Across the flats at the breech it is 1.125 and at the muzzle 1.000. I would be willing to part with it. PM me if you are interested. thumb

Ernie does nice work. I've been fortunate enough to see his setup for making the octagon barrels, its not unlike Mark Stratton's method.

I forgot to mention that this will be a 7x57 on a Mexican with double square bridge.

Vapo-

What brand did you use and what was the original contour before you made it an octagon? Do you know the finished weight of the barrel after you turned it?

Thanks!

Marc,
Mark requested that I get a #5 Shilen contour to end up with a lightweight barrel.

Oh - i guess that means you don't want an octagonal barrel cut in half homer

The barrel was octagon from Wind River and Elcabelero had someone turn the front half round. It took forever and the transition was poor

All I did was recut the transition, chamber (300 H&H) and install the barrel to the action and crown and install the iron sights.

I also installed a Dakota bolt handle and a Dakota three pos safety and a new trigger.

I did not imply in previous posts that I milled the octagon.....I've done it and won't ever again!

If Green Mountain makes a barrel in the caliber you are looking for that would be a good place to start. I have been exceptionaly pleased with their barrels. It is easy enough to turn a half round from a full octagon.

I believe PacNor will octagon their barrels for a price and they offer most any caliber imaginable.

Here is a GM barrel made from a full octagon..
