Mauser mag box mod
I need to file/grind about .040 off the rear and .020 of the font sides of the interior of a mauser magazine to allow using 30-06 length ammo. Any recomendations on how to do this?

I filed mine, there is another option out there, that is aready fitted for the 06 length cases. It was for a 1904 Portuguese hinged-floor plate I thinks...

Dunlop says you can file the rear back (making sure not to bevel it toward either the top or the bottom) until you get into the floorplate latch recess. You also use a combination of round and skinny flat files to extend the front, but then you will have to clean up the overhanging edge of the receiver feed ramp.

It's not hard, just work slowly. You can speed it up by using a double cut file to remove the bulk, then smooth the finish with a finer cutting file. Or you can stone to a final smooth finish.

Thanks everyone.

I'd have a real hard time convincing my wife that I need a milling machine/ 3-in-1 to rework a couple actions though. I used a new file like several of you recomended but it was slow going. Should have thought of a double cut earlier though. The flatness turned out +/- .002 across the entire surface by taking measurments ever so often and adjusting my eforts accordingly. It turned out real well. At the same time, I also recontoured the trigger guard a little too. Finished the whole thing off with a bead blast,parkerizing,gunkote.

Davis , your problem it's only with military ammo sporting ammo it's shorter and you don't need to file nothing , if you want to fire ball ammo for practice you can load one at time in the magazine , or simply one pass in the seater to shorten it .
