Heym Bolt Action Rifles?

No experience of my own; Heym rifles have a good reputation and loyal followership for many decades, but they lack the incessant advertisement hype and media attention of Blasers. They lack Blaser's goofy plastic charm, and they also lack the complaints about and failure stories on Blasers, so I suppose it's about even. :-)

The SR 21 embodies a couple of Blaseresque design concepts (in order to cheapen production), like the joint barrel-receiver unit; the predecessor SR 20 is a good gun (look on the used guns market); and the SR 30 is a very appealing, classically elegant straight-pull with a circumferential ball-bearing locking system.

They have a big bore bolt. They will make it up to .600 NE. Its a CRF and seems to have all the trimmings.

the Heym Express. Never saw one, but should be a great action and rifle, and expensive! Used to be more than 8000 German Marks, or around 4000 USD?

I love your phrase "goofy plastic charm"...! ... even though I love my own R93. It's strange -- I am simultaneously putoff by the "goofy plastic charm" and yet, won over by the pure, clever functionality of the design and the way it handles in the field. Please tell me about the "complaints" and "failures" to which you refer. Mine has been flawless so far, but I'd like to know if there are some inherent flaws I should be ready for.

The Heym bolt-actions are good rifles, but a trifle oeverpriced compared to other "mass-produced" high quality bolt-actions.

I have owned a couple of Heyms and I cannot rate them highly enough.

Both my rifles have been the recently discontinued SR20. It has been replaced by the SR21 which has a sort of Mod 70 safety and a magazine as opposed to my rifles that have a 3 position Sako type safety and a hinged floor plate. They build rifles in a vast aray of calibres and they also build true left hand.

This is no mass produced rifle - They pillar and glass bed at the factory and the finish is excellent. Well worth the cost IMO. They run at about $1400 new here.

The do a Classic straight comb as well as a Euro drop comb, full stock, target and short barrel driven game style.

My 7x57 was a real tack driver and shot into sub half an inch. My 8x57 will do an inch with fatory loads and I am sure I can tighten this up.

The African Express rifle they make is also availiable in LH and again they produce a huge range of big bore calibres.

No comment on the SR30 straight pull or the various doubles and drillings on offer, but the SR20, and presumably the SR21 is a great turn bolt rifle.

Sometimes I dream about a Heym 88 Safari (?), I mean the big bore model. They make them in .375 Flanged, .450 3 1/4, and many more. Iï¿½, sure .450/400 3", too, but I think I would rather buy the .450 now.

If its really a "wet" dream I add a 20/76 barrel set :-)

The M88's can also be had in calibers more suitable to use here. I am one who thinks a good side-by-side rifle has uses other than just dangerous game hunting. Some are accurate (pattern well enough) for use at ranges up to at least 200 meters.
