Tighten case fit on M1909 Argentine bolt face & extractor
I have a DWM M1909 calvary carbine with a bad barrel that I want to rebarrel to 7X57. However 7X57 rounds fall out of the bolt face when extracted.
How does one tighten the extractor fit to retain the case so it remains in the bolt face until it hits the ejector. The 7X57s fall out of the bolt face about halfway back to the ejector.

I would opt for a new extractor.

I had the same situation when I put together a 257 Rob on an 09 Arg action. I replaced the extractor with a new Argentine extractor and the problem remained. I looked at case dimensions and found that there are minor differences between the original 7.65 Mauser round and the 7x57 (and the 8x57 and the 257). I replaced the Arg extractor with a new one for a 1908 Brazilian (7x57) and the problem went away. I have a feeling there is a slight difference in the extractors. I mentioned this to a Mauser "expert" or two, and they were quick to explain that all 98 extractors are the same. I think I might beg to differ.

Toward the end of the extractor that holds the cartridge there is a narrow band of steel that rides on the bolt. If this band is lightly ground such that it allows the extractor to ride closer to the bolt the rounds will be held closer.

This has worked for me.

this is correct....there is only a very little amount of alteration to be allowed this way.

Thanks Jim!

Thanks for the input guys,
Not sure I am steady enough to be that exacting with a Dremel tool. I will swap a few extractors around. I did try a feeler guage between the locking lug and the extractor. There is only about .005 clearance unless I start belting down the locking lug too.

I was aware that the 7.65 head is a little bigger than a 7X57 but this one is not tight on a 7.65 either. It makes me wonder if it ever was and it has all matching numbers. A 6.5X55 works fine though.

Why wouldn't a couple of spots of weld to narrow the space work?

Weld? Where?

on the underside of the extractor where it meets the case rim. that is what was done to one of my very early model 70 classics that was real sloppy and would allow the cartridge to drop out. I didn't do it. A gunsmith did, and it worked very well.
