Is this action of a suitable length to allow the use of 30-06 based cartridges? If not, what case would you suggest for a .338 or larger rebarrel on this action.

Sorry, but the 24/47 is an intermediate length large ring action. They were designed for the 7.92X57mm. Anything on that case should feed.
The original chambering (8mm Mauser)is a fine round when loaded to its full potential. If your 24/47 is one of the FN contract rifles, the workmanship is probably pretty nice as well.
Somebody else probably has some experience with other cases that will work in this action.

I've got two 8x57s.I just want to try something a little different. What I would use a .358win or .338federal for I could just as well use the 8x57 so those two are pretty much out.

I was thinking about what would feed from the magazine with the least amount of hassel. You'll have more case capacity with the X 57mm than something based on the .308 Win. The .350 Rem mag may be a feeding problem, don't know for sure. Same with the Styer.

Unless your really set on using that action for one reason or another, I'd go with a full length 98. The VZ24's are available and relatively inexpensive. Add a barrel chambered in 338-06 and there ya go. Another round you might consider if your gonna use the 24/47 would be the 9.3x57

Thats not a bad idea guys.To stay with the same case and just move up to a 9.3 bore. Do you guys think it would be a better killer on moose and bear than the 8x57?

Larger heavier bullet wins for me. Don't know how much deader they'd be though? Big Grin Assuming your talking Black bear.

The 8x57 will do just fine as is. My own 24/47 will shoot 1" at 100 yds all day long with the right amount of AA2230C and a Rem 185 corelokt.

Now, if you have to have a .338 the 338-08 or as they call it now, the 338 Federal would do all the 358 Win will. If you wan to use factory ammo or perhaps handloads with the nosler 210 partition, then the .338-06 will work through that magazine. My Weatherby .338-06 ammo functions in the magazine as is but it is not ideal and heavier bullets require a shorter than standar OAL.

The right bullet in the right place from either round will handle the task quite well.

My loads in the 8x57 are the 200gr nos/par at 2600fps and the 250gr woodleigh at 2300fps.I've carried it in Alaska a few times and never felt under gunned. The 8x57,in my mind,is a great cartidge for general hunting and really shins with the heavier bullets.I just don't need another one.Two is enough for me but, the 9.3 is interesting.
Does anyone out there have first hand experience with the 9.3x57 on game.If so,do you believe it to be a good choice for moose, black bear, and grizzly in south central Alaska.

Yes, the 9.3x57 is a good round. Anything the 358 Win will do the 9.3x57 will do better, IMO. Mine is a 96 so my loads are sedate but lethal. In a 98 they would not be far behind the 9.3x57.
