Boy, I could spend hours picking that rifle apart. But why bother.

I believe it's an early Tilden. They were a fairly popular item for Mausers and pre-war Model 70's.

If you Google for "tilden safety" you can find a couple examples of pre-war Model 70's.

Any chance you took the bottom metal out? Kinda looks like the old Mauser guard built for the double set triggers.

The entire rifle is interesting..perhaps 50's??

Urban legend has it that Monte Kennedy was forced into including that particular rifle in his otherwise excellent book. Apparently Watkins was the brother-in-law of the publisher or similar, or perhaps the relationship was with Kennedy himself, might been his own BIL. At any rate IMO the safety and scope are the best parts of that rifle.

50'ish, has a Salvador Dali and Rod Serling quality to it. That rifle would quickly move to the back of the safe. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I like the end cap on the barrel but thats just me. Re-stock it without the inlays, wierd checkering high comb cheeckpiece and I could live with it. DW

If I had time I'd go look at that rifle this week but I am catching up on work before my Deer hunt. The guy that has it for sale is nearby and I've bought a pistol from him before. Would like to handle it in person but I can't afford it anyhow. I like everything but the wood, I even like the metal Schnabel on the end, especially fond of the .257 Roberts and the early 3 position safety.
Replace the wood with all the same furniture and it would be a classy set up.
