Springfield receivers
Could some one help me identify a rifle? It is a custom Springfield sporter in .35 Whelan. It has NF proof marks with the date 12-29-55. 0366485 is also engraved on the left side of the receiver. The receiver, floor plate, trigger guard and bolt handle are fully engraved with the floor plate having a hunting scene of a large buck with a gold cross between the antlers. An individuals name along with the city, Gmunden Austria, is engraved on the floor plate. Gunsmith or original owner?? It utilizies a tang safety. The stock is finely checkered, nicely figured with an ebony and silver grip cap. All the screw heads are engraved. The stock resembles those of Holland and Holland I have seen from the fifties. Is this typical of 50's Continental craftsmenship? I have no idea how my Dad came across it, but it has been in the family as far back as I remember. He gave it to me back in the middle sixties. Thanks for any info. If a photo would help with identification, please advise and I'll round up a digital camera. Thanks, Cobalt

Sounds like pre WW2 gun, made by some old craftsman that made guns in his closet and could make a perfectly round ball with a file.

A photo would help, maybe...The name is probably the owner of the gun, as most smiths are more subtle with there names. You need to furnish the name and all the markings to get it identified..

Whatever you have sounds like a nice period piece, and don't you wish it could talk?
