WinkColor case hardening question
Is color case hardening a purely esthetic option? Did it originate as a metal hardening technique with the tinting just a side effect?
Is there any point to color case hardening a modern bolt action, other than esthetic preference?

jimatcatscroll farther down ... like a couple of day's worth... i asked similar questions and got some good answers....the hardening procedure penetrates the steel to about 0.005 deep... case coloring, on the other hand only goes 0.001 deep...

vanI wouldn,t see any positive value in the esthetic color case a bolt. It would show wear very quickly and then look like heck. van

tin cana bolt action that is highlighted with color hardening is right classy sometimes- cc'ing the shroud, scope rings, triggerguard is a favorite combination of mine.

yesHi Wink
well beside the nice colour. this method has been used to give a harder surface depending to the kind of steel used up to sometime 60 HRC and a softer core . when properly done it gives a very good wear resistance to the object.

driverHello,
Check out Doug Trumbull Restorations and his groups work w/ color case hardening. Excellent work. Have had them do some items for me, scope rings, bolt shrouds, etc. and end result is quite stunning and does add a touch of class to the rifle.
