bolt movement in an older FN Mauser Action
I am not sure how to discribe this but here goes....

I have an old Husquvarna 9.3x62 that I am restocking. It is very smooth an shows no looseness when it is closed. When it is totally open there is play up and down - so much the it hits the top of the new stock blank.

I can shave the stock down with no problem but is this play acceptible or to be expected in a pre WWII action?? The play at full extention of the bolt up and down is about 3/16" and side to side about 1/4".

I have shot about 40 rounds through it with no problems so far. Is this a problem I should address? Or is it normal wear in an old action.

If it is a problem, what are my choices?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds totally normal to me. There will be a good amount of movement when a 98 bolt is open.

As usual just my $.02

It is my 1st mauser action so I have had nothing to compare it to.

Riodot, I have 2 1950-51 husqvarna 640 rifles with FN 98 actions. Nice rifles and slick actions. 270 and a 06, im searching for a fn 98 9.3x62. Im going to restock mine also . Im searching for a nice stock pattern and also im useing a older 640 beech stock modifying it for a pattern making the grip more open and longer and a shadow line check piece.

Is yours a 98 action or a small ring 96 with the high side wall ?

It is a true 98 - I researched it on a Husquvarna history website mentioned on the forum. It is a model 146.

Nothing unusual in a Mauser.
