BadboyzConverting Mark X Side safety to FN Flag style
I have 2 Mark X Mausers with the sliding safety. I purchased two FN shrouds with the low profile flag safety. Is it as simple as disassembling the bolt and installing the new shroud and safety?

sliversAny shroud mounted safety will require fitting to the cocking piece. "Flag style" is usually referred to as the 3 position military safety, which will interfere with the scope, unless the scope is mounted extremely high. I would assume you are converting to the "Timney/Buehler" 2 position shroud mounted. I don't believe I've ever installed a Buehler on a Mark X, but I've installed a bunch of 3 position Recknagel and Dakota safeties (like 3 position Win 70). While in GS school 30+ yrs ago I used several Buehler safeties on military Mausers. None are 'drop-in"

Uncle GrinchI’m sure some of the experts will chime in with better or more info, but some Mark X Mausers have a speed-loc cocking assembly that is different from the traditional 98 Mauser.
Step 1: Remove the factory trigger/safety mechanism.
Step 2: Remove the bolt shroud.
Step 3: Buy a Wisner 3 position Model 70 safety and a Timney trigger.
Step 4; Install both; safety will still require fitting by someone who knows how they work.

BobsterAre you talking about the old FN Supreme left side flag safety? I believe it only has two positions. Safe up with bolt locked and down to fire.
Is this it?

BobsterOK, then you install the shroud as you would the original. Safety flag in fire position, CP held back by a coin or a pin through the CP takedown hole(if it has one). Is your trigger a basic military style, with a single stage trigger, and the slide safety just blocks the trigger sear? Or is it a Timney type with a trapdoor sear? Either way, you will likely need to do some fitting where the cam on the safety contacts the cocking piece. Settle on a trigger first, as it's sear will determine where the CP will sit and thus the fit of the safety cam.

leemar28No dog in the fight ......But, Had one on a 98 Mauser easiest safety to inadvertently be moved from safe to fire. Very easy to install however.

Jim KobeAnd don't forget, you may want to eliminate the thumb safety lever. All in all, it s not a job for the faint of heart.
