Not sure about the "family car" stunt, but, I agree with your evaluation of Shackleton. He was extraordinary, and the trust that his team had in him was also extraordinary. Amazing feats of navigation and sailing.
This ad. has been questioned, but it still says it all:

"Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success."

And then, of course, there is Robert Falcon Scott!
