My Sako Collection
I'm new to the site, and would like to show off some of my Sako's

Here is a 7mm Hunter I built for my Dad. Notice the aftermarket detachable magazine similar to the Tikka setup.

Here is a sweet 7mm AV Laminate I have.

Here is a little 223 AI Hunter pencil barrel I have. Shoots awesome.

Here is a Heavy Douglas barreled 223 on a L461 action. The composite stock has yet to be painted. Wildcat composites in Sherwood Park Alberta built the stock. A++ in my books.

Here is my favorite rifle. A custom built Sako AIII chambered in the 338 Gaillard wildcat with one of Gaillards 26 inch hand lapped barrels. It sits in my custom Screwbean Mesquite stock for display

Here is what it looks like with my McMillan Hunter stock for the field.

Here is what it shoots like

Here are the details of this wildcat

The top left target was some 416 Rem Mag brass I was fireforming with 225 Hornady Interlocks. 85gr IMR 7828 & CCI 250 primers. 2967 FPS (Low), 2995 FPS (High). I also notice that that target should have been rotated 90 degrees CCW as that is how it was at the range.

The top right target was the last 3 rounds left from my 1st 338 Gaillard that I had. They were loaded with 250 Sierra HPBT, 340 Fire Formed Norma cases 89.5gr RL25 and CCI 250 primers.
2887FPS (Low), 2959FPS (High).

The lower left target is a 5 shot group of Barnes 225gr XXX. These were Fire Formed 8mm Rem Mag cases with 86gr IMR 7828 and CCI 250 primers. 3054 (Low), 3077 (High).

The lower right target was an experiment. 200gr Nosler Ballistic tips with Fire Formed 8mm Rem Mag cases with 88gr RL22 and CCI 250 primers. Nosler does not make a ballistic tip in 200gr anymore, only the Accubond. I figured I'd try these before I used my Accubonds. I must say I was impressed!
3249FPS (Low), 3271FPS (High).

Details of what the cartridge is

8mm Rem Mag sized & Fireformed to 338
10 thousandths case taper
I believe it is a 38 degree shoulder

I call it the 340 on steroids!

My pet load

8mm Rem Mag case that has been fire formed!
CCI 250 Primer (all I had at the time, I now have some F215M to play with)!
250gr HPBT Sierra
89.5gr RL25
3050-3070 FPS

VERY nice there - I have all Tikkas for my bolt guns (including one of the last M695 Whitetail Hunters made, it is in .30-06) - as you know, the Tikka WH was almost a carbon copy of the Sako and sold so well that Tikka had to shelve it and make the less expensive T3 because people stopped buying Sakos - LOL.

I have the following Sakos.

AV Fiberclass in 30-06 with a Zeiss 3-9x40 Conquest

75 stainless synthetic in 7mm

TRG-S in 338 Winchester Magnum

222 L46 varminter

I'll take some photos when I get a chance.

I am looking for another 75 in 280, 308, or 25-06.

I also want a 75 or 85 Varminter in 243 or 22-250.

And a 85 Kodiak in 338 or 375.

Are the 1960s sakoes more accurate than the new ones?

I have Sakos from the 1960s and 1970s, the 1980s and from the early 2000s.

The most accurate one is the newest one, the TRG and the 75.

The earlier Sakos have some very desirable features that make them more attractive to some shooters. However, "later" model Sakos are every bit as accurate, and sometimes moreso. I say "later" in that I've never owned anything later than the late-1980's or early 1990's, so I have no experience with the Model 75 and later.

The TRG-s is only a distant cousin to the conventional Sakos, but the ones I've owned are ringers when it comes to accuracy.

This rifle was supposed to be for my Dad, but now after getting it all back together & the barrel channel fitting properly, I am not so sure I want to give it to him anymore?

Here are all the details:

Sako AV Magnum action
S/S Matte finish 7mm Rem Mag Sako profiled Ted Gaillard barrel finished @ 24 1/4" with recessed crown.
Sako Hunter Wood stock @ 13.5 LOP. I do have a McMillan in the closet I am considering putting on instead?
Trigger set to 3lbs.
After Market detachable 3+1 round magazine.
Leupold rings & mounts.
Leupold Vari-X III 3.5x10x40mm gloss duplex.

Reloading begins tomorrow. 140gr Nosler pills to start with.

This rifle came to me as a 22" 7mm when I got it. It shot fine but had a bulge in the barrel about half way down the pipe. Copper fouling was terrible, so I opted for one of Ted's fine replacements.

Smiler

This little beauty was built from 2 different rifles. The action came in a trade earlier this year from a fellow way up north. This is by far the smoothest A action I have ever owned (and I've owned a few). I cycles incredibly smooth.

The stock was from another trade. I had to have it inleted for the bigger trigger assembly this action sports. It was pillar bedded & I decided to remove the ugly red factory pad in exchange for a nice decelerator pad.

Here are the specs on the build.

#2 26" Ted Gaillard barrel (turned down to factory Sako shank size) 1-8 twist matte finish chambered in 264 Win Mag.
Factory Laminate stock pillar bedded & decelerator pad installed. 14" LOP.
Factory trigger tuned to 2 1/2lbs.
Talley mounts & rings
Leupold VXIII 4.5x14x40mm B&C reticule
Nosler brass & 140gr Accubonds (powder charge yet to be determined) RL25 to start with though.

Virgin trip to the range tomorrow.

Great pictures Wookie! I'd love to see your setup to take these pictures. I've always had trouble getting a good full rifle picture, but seems like you know what you're doing.

Thanks, for the tips. I don't have the umbrellas, but I'm gonna have to try a similar set up and see how it works!

Well I finally had some time to do some more shooting. I shot on my black drop this time. More Sako envy for your enjoyment.

Here are some updated photos of my 6.5mm-300 Win Mag. It now sports a 4.5x14x40mm 1" DPLX with CDS. The stock will be painted in a spiderweb paint finish in the new year. I may have the barreled action powder coated also.
