My 15 month old DD made the grade and is running the Armbruster next month in Cheyenne. I have pulled out all stops to try to get him ready.He will be running against 60 of the best young dogs from the US and Germany.

I bought a Garmin 2 dog tracking system $700 bucks worth to lay drags and appraise his performance.

The next morning to city park we go. I lay a 150 yard duck drag, and sent Franky.
He nailed the drag and the GPS system was a great tool to check his performance. We went for a 1/2 hour fast walk searching a empty field. On the way out I dropped 3 bumpers and marked them on the GPS this was about 500 yard square.

I told Franky to hunt dead, he picked up all 3 the and I did not not even have to check the GPS.


Back at the truck I load Franky up and reached for the GPS on my belt. IT WAS GONE ! I lost it first time out!

I took a walk back along the same route and come up dry.

After a hour to cool off, I unload Franky and had him smell my hand. I give him the find command. Off we go and he is searching hard and swinging wide

I/2 way through I rest him Its pushing 85 and too hot to run a DD.
I let him smell my hand again. About 50 yards from the truck he
gets birdy so to speak, he did a little digging and then marks the spot . I walk over. There's the GPS. I did the best acting I could and gave a stern fetch it up command. He carefully picked it up and delivered to hand.

Is the Armbruster a DD trial?
When and where will it be held in Cheyenne?
I don't do the bird dog thing, but use a an Airedale for coyotes and am picking up a Mt. Cur pup next week for the same...
I like to watch dogs work.

The Armbruster is the HZP breed test (Fall test) that includes a hare track,and breed show. It requires a minimal score of 65 on the spring test and a pre qualifying and hip certification.

The meat of the two day test includes a blind retrieve, search behind a liberated duck on a pond with heavy cover, the retrieve of a 150 yard drag of a dead duck and retrieve of a 300 yard drag of a hare,and a search a field for upland game birds, and the track of a wild jack rabbit

Besides being a breed test its also a trial where the 60 or so of the best young dogs of the US and Germany will be ranked.

My pup will be 16 months old at the time of the test.

The spring test (VJP) and the fall test (HZP) and a required breed show after 16 months are what make a DD a DD and not a wirehair. There are lots of good wirehairs , (after all they came from the Drahthaar), but thanks to the AKC's lack of guidance many of the wirehairs do not resemble the DD.I have seen some small mostly light colored wirehairs that are not true versatile hunting dogs. At 6 months my DD was hunting and pointing quail in the am for me, and blood trailing my 10 point in the evening. He started his water dog work last Saturday by doing a double retrieve on teal. By the end of the year he will be hunting rails and rabbits.

I sort of envy you in that your breed is not only permitted, but expected to be an all round hunting dog. Our Britts are great on rabbits and deer as well. When I mentioned that to the breeder from whom we had purchased our female, he became upset that we were "ruining" the breed. He also was appalled when I mentioned using them for retrieving ducks. The dogs are naturally good at it and they enjoy it. I think it strengthens the hunting drive when the bird season is over and makes them better overall.
