gwp longevity
I have three GWPs. My old girl, Annie, was my introduction to the breed .
She turned 17 a couple weeks ago. She's ancient, and quite frail, but hasn't quite let us know it's time, yet.
She's been mostly retired for five years, but still got out for a half hour in light cover last fall.
Our breeder suggested that 14-16 "isn't rare" with this breed. I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen this breed get this old.
Have had many over the years and I would say the average is 12-14..had one old girl that made it to 16 1/2 and hunted for a bit her last year. I'd rather use them hard and let them do what they enjoy.
My guy was fourteen and two months.
We lost Annie yesterday. Heart and mind were still there, but she started going off her food a few days ago, and was having a lot of trouble getting her feet under her to stand and walk. Anabolic steroids gave her another six months, but it's a battle we know we will all lose.
She had been "Granny Annie" for quite a few litters of basset puppies, which my wife breeds.
