J.D.RandellHound Dogs?
Any of the hounds, although a preference for Blue Tick or Redbone. Others would be American, English Foxhound, Bloodhound, or maybe a beagle.
Big concern is I like to walk in open beach areas w/ lots of game. I don't want to work the dog on a leash. I've had beagles take off after game, and expect a coon dog would be faster and farther afield.
But they seem like great dispositions, loyal, friendly, and I like the howling, yelping and the "nose" in it all.
I want a hound dog that "hunts" . . . not a pointer, bird dog, or retriever.
Anyone have hounds?

chilcotin hillbillySounds like you are looking for a pet not a hound that hunts. If you are not going to hunt your dog then you need to break it off chasing any game . Your best bet for that is an e-collar. Where are you at. Good luck with your search.

J.D.RandellNo real issues with "chasing" or working a scent. I just don't want to have a dog running off and not coming back. Hounds tend to run off on a scent.
I keep coming back to a lab. There was a lab/hound mix at the shelter . . . and I missed him.

BigBI had a bloodhound when I was young and it was a good dog. Never strayed to far and was good in the house. They have a very loud voice and when hot can drool something fierce.
Never had any real health issues other than you had to clean the ears often.

J.D.RandellBlood hounds drool -- all hounds to some extent. And their ears need attention. But they're calm, loyal, friendly. Not a guard dog. I like the howling/baying . . . That's a prime attraction for me. I want a dog that "talks" . . . And hound dogs will "sing" with you.

wyoskeJ.D., you probably know its tough to beat a Lab for an all around really nice dog.

Lab is No. 1 popular breed in the USA, "Swamp Collie" is 2nd. (Golden Retriever). I could probably teach a lab to "sing" . . .

BigBMy bloodhound was friendly if she knew you but the house and yard were hers and she was rather protective of them. She went thru a window once after someone that was not supposed to be on the front porch I assume. Broke both panes of glass. Never new for sure who it was, as they never came back.

J.D.RandellBassets are nice dogs, but too short legged for running on the beach.
Hound mix here is available locally from the shelter. Looks like a nice dog.

K EvansWe've got a pair of Treeing Walker Hounds (they look sort of like a long legged Beagle or Bassett) that are pretty much like Tailgunner's dogs...they have taken over the couch and are the most affectionate dogs I have ever seen, they have a big voice and lover to run and or walk....although a e-collar comes in handy at times.
