Need to know what you will be using it for.
Training, hunting, ducks or upland?

Mostly Grouse, it is for my Brittany (7 months old). Maybe some ducks and pheasnts but predominately grouse. Trainer suggested a Sport Dog that beeps, he didn't know the model # off hand. Thanks

I have an Innotek model TT-100A that I'm very happy with. It also has the locater beeper which is invaluable any time your dog gets out of sight. It also has the beeper that lets you know if your dog is moving or on point.

Does the beeper bother the dog? The birds? Thanks

Some people believe the beeper affect the birds holding or not holding. Also, dogs are very smart and the beeper may cause a conditioned response; either good or bad.

As I mentioned in the email, I prefer the Garmin GPS collar so I can see where the dog is. Beepers are not very loud and the wind can hide their sound. If the dog is 75 yards away on point, will you hear the beeper? I think not.

Also, Duke and Princess will chase a wounded bird all the way across country. With the Garmin, I can see where they are. Last year, Duke took 10 minutes to catch a bird. It was quite a long wait. When he came back, he was quite proud of himself. Imagine if Buddy was gone that long chasing a bird for you, you might worry a bit. With the Garmin, you can literally watch him pursue his prey.

The Dogtra collars have a lifetime warranty on parts and I have have good success with them. I prefer their control arrangement to the other brands. Cabella's carries all the major brands, so I was able to handle them side by side to see which one I liked best. DT from Texas is not a good brand. My first collar from them failed about 5 weeks out of warranty. Plus the screw in antenna fell out many times. Since they refused to help me with the out of warranty repair, I bought the Dogtra collars. They have a better warranty and excellent customer service.

Whichever one you pick, check the warranty first, they all break eventually. The cheap ones cost the most since they have short warranty periods.

Buddy defintely can cover some ground. Those Arizona dogs are built for speed. My concern with the GPS collars, is the cover we hunt in. I know I lose reception on me Garmin ETrex all the time. I am hestitant about the beeper. Buddy's trainer said the guys he works with are buying the Sport Dog with the beeper and making the beeper sound like a young hawk. I think that might be annoying also, to the dog. Thank you.

I have found the dog GPS has better reception than my hand held GPS units. Partly because the entire dog collar is the antenna, whereas the hand held unit antenna is only 4 inches long. You could buy one from Cabella's and try it. If it does not work for you in cover, then Cabella's will refund your money.

Some states have restrictions on using electronic calls, check your state regs. I know guys that use mouth hawk calls to make the birds hold, they won't flush if they think there is a hawk overhead.

I would highly recommend the Dogtra collars...price/quality ratio is excellent.

If you hunt in the thick stuff for grouse like I do, you don't need a Garmin IMO. You could also get a collar with a locate feature and use it if needed....I hate beepers sounding all the time.

I consider the Garmin GPS collar system cheap insurance. A lost dog costs a lot more than the GPS collar.

tritronics or dogtra are the only way to go...... i think tritronics is partnering with garmin on a unit, might be worth looking into....
