My wife brought home a "pound puppy", about four months old, which appears to be mostly yellow lab. We are moving soon to a 10 acre place with lots of public land ajoining and a good quail population. I would like to try to train the dog to be a hubter, or at least to walk along with me without blowing the hunt. Since I haven't had a dog in many years, can anyone suggest a good book to get me started training this pup?

Game dog by Richard Wolters great book and easy to follow. you will get results with any dog .Simply the best

One of the most interesting books I have read in many, many years is "Don't Shoot the Dog" by Karen Prior" (The author's name, I think; I lent the book to a friend a while back.)
It is not so much about dog-training specifically, but all about positive reinforcement for people and animals in general.
When I get my next puppy I will try and train it it the way she says.
Actually, all about "clicker training" and those who have mastered it can get dogs and other animals to do the most incredible things.

Dogs are very easy to train, it's training the owners that is the most difficult. Lots of quail huh? What about pheasant and dove? Just asking cause I am not all that far from you.

RJL, you are certainly correct about training the owners, this pup will be by wifes project the way things are going. Our new digs are in eastern Shasta County. I have seen doves, lots of quail, and afew turkeys not too far away. We are in the hills overlooking the Fall River Valley, so waterfowl are plentfull. I am getting old enough that a leasurely walk after quail sounds about right. I picked up a copy of "Game Dog", so maybe I can get this pup interested yet.
