Long story but a well breed hunting Plott from NC got crossed with an AKC Rhodesian Ridgeback. Male pups were brindle, females a russet like this girl.
She doesn't have the backward ridge, but when excited the ridge hackles come up in the same pattern. Nala is 1 year old last week and is 70 pounds.
protective of my family, strong as hell, fact, great nose, and uses sight as well at long range for hogs.....plus a great partner in the woods for work. She makes sure I know when somethings isn't right.

She is honestly the first big dog I have had who was a house pet companion hunting dog guard dog...lol...lots of character and very protective...when she hunts in grass or brush she bounds like a gazelle, but in open county it looks like a greyhound....but when she is on blood she opens up sooo loud and distinct.
I have no experience prior to this with either breed. They are both web footed though.
I have worked with curs, blk/tans, blue tick, walkers and a host of terriers.
So far this is my best mate!
Oh in-laws are between Bend and Redmond. I used to bird hunt in Madras, and fished all over that county...you can see around there; here it is so steep deep and brushy.

Idaho Sharpshooterthat's a cross I could live with at my house. I have looked at Ridgebacks, but was concerned about the hip issues.

NorsemanI remember when I was a kid my Dad took our ridgeback camping and he was put inside pickup canopy at bedtime because he was a fartin machine, well anyway long story short, all the camper's were complaining about this big bear with low baying grunt to the camp ranger the next morning. We had the whole campground to ourselves latter that day at Camp Sherman as well as the Metolius river. It was amazing how campers could spin the story and chew the fat!!!!
The Rhodesian ridgeback had a unique deep and long bay, almost 10 seconds long. It could make your hair stand up on the back of your neck!
Take your dog camping and tell the camper's you saw big bear!!!!!!!!!!!!

her bay is almost a roar....she did it on a bear while i was working in the trinity alps and she was 4 months old....scarred the crap out of me. I couldn't believe that sound came from my dog

If I wasn't such a dyed in the wool bird hunter, I would own a Rhodesian Ridgeback and maybe a Scottish Deerhound or even perhaps a Irish Wolfhound and chase some coyotes assuming no fences are around.

333_OKHWell she had her way with a bobcat...it lost ...and so did my finger when she lunged for it again and I was holding her collar. The weak link between a 6'8 300 pound man and his 70 pound 1 year old RhodPlott is his fingers!
I have two broken bones...one is a spiral and dislocated my middle finger. Never got pics to do it justice.
BUT SINCE I COULD NOT RESET IT RIGHT MYSELF; MY WIFE AND I GOT 4 HOURS TO OURSELVES TO CHAT IN THE ER WAITING ROOM.

333_OKHYes, and I need others....she doesnt keep an eye on her 6 and nearly got torn by a small boar who came to the rescue of a big sow..My bad, I didnt even have a gun, just my hog knife...It was just an opportunity to see how she does.
I have had walkers, blue ticks, cur, blk n tans, but this dog is nuts!
Oh and I have no idea how to train her to flush feral cattle when we also have our ranch cows in the prairies.

NorsemanYou need to realize that you have a hound cross cur, you need another hound or cur with her to hunt in a pack if that's want you want to pursue.
By the way, does your dog jump backwards?

OMG not two of them! I do love how she guards my 6 year old and hates the 15 year old boyfriend.
YES, she prances backwards if I have something she wants as if she needs to get back to get a better look at it. In actuality she is getting the distance to make a run on me to take it.
When she hunts she springs high in the air to look around even in short grass.

Rich, when I got mine from a friend they had one brindle boy and two girls left. I should have taken them all.
In the parking lot between the hills and home we saw one of her sisters. Talk to the guy. His girl is crazier than mine.

333_OKHFinger is still screwed up. Joint in ring finger broken and not healing...oh well guess I get even more metal in my body...
My aunt is 84 living here...big question is will my cousins keep the ranch?
They had to work it as kids so really kinda despise it now.
I grew up working it for the family cause the kids hated it and it is like a heart beat to me, and the last of the ranches we have left.
