OkieNewtonDog and a skunk
Wifey let the German Shepard in the back yard this am and he found himself a skunk. Is it true they can be bathed in tomato juice to get ride of the odor. Have to deal with this when I get home fromschool this evening. Any other ideas?

AzGuyTomato juice/paste and baking soda....kinda works.

The best stuff out there is from Nature's Miracle called Skunk Oder Remover. Available at Petsmart.

shorthairBeen down this rosd before if fact just 3 months ago & in my experience absoultly nothing works better than massingill VINEGAR & WATER douce. You will need several bottles but it works far better than anything else that we've tried. You might try a mix of hydgroen perxiode & baking soda mix in an open bowl. My youngest GSP got it so bad that his ticked blaze was green.

champInteresting about the vinegar & water and the Nature's Miracle. I'll have to remember that. The internet recommended the hydrogen peroxide/baking soda mix added with some dish soap would work best if you could do it right after it happens and before it gets into the pores, which open up due to adrenaline building up due to the chasing of the skunk! I have my GSP/Border Collie on a long leash before I let her out for her last pee of the night. Twice in one week was enough for me. I just had her out swimming last weekend and there was still the faint smell of it even 3 weeks later...

MyNameIsEarlI guarantee this will work better than anything else-
Take a lemon and squeek juice on effected area. real lemons work the best but bottled lemon juice from the store will work ok too. Then pour baking soda on the area you put lemon juice, work into lemon juice to make a paste. THen rinse the dog. THe baking soda nuetralized the acid of the lemon juice and skink juice. The lemon adds some scent and the skunk smell will be gone.
I have used this on several occasions and it works better than the dousche, or tomator juice methods.

Earl, I wonder if my remedy is somehow related to yours..
I tried everything on my Boxer/Skunk victim.. Including the stuff from Petsmart.. and other recipe's mentioned here.. I ended up using a Gal.sized Orange with Pumice hand cleaner.. Worked pretty good.. But for about 6 months, every weekly bath when the dog was wet you would still smell that dang skunk..

shorthairOne thing about all the "cure's" is that everytime pup gets in the pool to excersie for the next 6 months the chlorine will bring the smell back for an hour or so

BUCKMTCall your vet. There is a shampoo, "Skunk-out" that is wonderful. I used to use the douche/tomato juice combo but the shampoo is the real deal. Takes two applications on Labs, I know from experience.
Good Luck.

Fallow BuckWe had a guide in Argentina who's GSP found a skunk while we were hunting partridges. How that dog managed to still point partridges after being sprayed in the face I will never understand. The thing was though that none of us wanted to go near the thing when it was on point as the smell was unbearable!!
At the end of the day the guy decided to drop the dog at the grooming parlour to get her washed.
The thing was that they guy liked the Bourbon a little too much. He'd start the day off woth 3-4 LARGE ones and then keep himself topped up as we went. Nice guy but a drunk, and he never really generated the inclination to do his job too well. Later that evening he turned up all dressed up for the ladies in te hotel bar. It was about 11pm and I offered him a drink. When his JD arrived I asked him if the dog still smelt. He just dropped his drink, shouted "Sheila!!" and ran out of the room. When he got back an hour later he explained that he'd been in the pub and forgotten about the dog in the parlour!!
I don't know what was worse, His guiding ability or the smell.
