Good source to find local LR shoots
One of the best ways to improve and have fun is to attend a local tactical match. Even if you only bring a hunting rifle, go with the mind set that you're there to have fun and learn, not compete. You'll learn and only get better and better.

I found two local shoots that I had no idea even existed. The first, 70 mile drive, shoots precison rifle, AR carbine and pistol. Some months I shoot them all and some I shoot just the precison rifle, out to 1000 yds. They used to ask for a "donation" for an entry fee but the organizer was loosing money each month so now asks for a $15 fee for the precison portion and $5 extra for the carbine/pistol portion. They shoot the Utah State Sniper Shoot and my first year out I took 5th place in a field of 46 shooters from 7 western states. The egg on my face is the winner of the State Shoot, I beat him the month before dancing

The second shoot is 40 miles from my house and is on private property. He charges $20 with shots out to 640 yds. A potporri of steel and paper targets to as close as 25 yds. Some very fast shooting with multiple targets at different ranges run in varying order.

What's great about these shoots is the amount of info you pick up from not just shooting but the comradre with the other shooters.

Last year I took a local shooter to a monthly match. He took his 270 with 3-9 scope. Didn't do well but had the time of his life. No one and I mean not one person poo pawed his weapon choice. We usually get 1-2 new shooters each month and all are welcome.

Even for a casual hunter, the Precision/tactical mathes are great to improve field postion shooting skills. I attend our monthly match at Zia Gun Club. The stages are very difficult and the more experience you gain from participation will translate nicely to the field. I'm traveling to NorCal Bolt Rifle Challenge in May. Gonna be a blast!

I really like to recommend the Sporting Rifle Match held at Whittington Center. It's very similar to Sporting Clays, except for the rifle discipline. 2 mile walk-through course in the mountains deer and elk country, 10 stations, 6 targets at each station with ranges from 200 to 900 yards. One shot per target only. Long range hunting practice on steel. About the most fun you can have with your clothes still on!!

Rick,

Now I know your first name! Cool

So glad you posted this video. Awesome!

We've got something like it in Northern Utah though I've not make it up there yet.
