Action choice
Hi guys

Planning something for long range tactical shooting (not Benchrest or F-class)
10 - 12 pounds weigh will be maximum
I need a long Remington foot print
My question is which custom action has the longest tenon for barrel support ?

I don't want a BAT or Flats

Thanks

Can't answer your direct question as to which Rem. style action has the longest tenon, but a compromise is what is commonly called a "Tubbs Lug" which replaces the very slim recoil lug as normal with Rem.'s and adds something like additional .5" to the lug area/barrel breech section. It is a very common modification to those shooting Remington based long range rifles. Just a suggestion.

You will find that all of the clones to be about the same for thread length.
FWIW, I've been pointing my customers to Stiller for a few years now. Police also if they want a custom build.

Check out surgeon. They integrate the recoil lug into the receiver, so that is about the longest tennon you can get while still using the remington footprint.

Bang for buck cant go past a Barnard S or SM if you want a magazine, not a 100% drop in clone of a Remmy but you will not find a better action.

The will never win the beauty padgent but pure form and functionalty they win hands down.

Brilliant guys to deal with too.

Gordy Gritters did a write up on a Haverkamp action in the Sept/2011 issue of the Varmint Hunters mag.
He was impressed enough to buy one of the actions and build a target rifle on it.

Like jpl said, check out the surgeon. They have the recoil lug and 20MOA picitanny rail integrated into the action so it is all one piece. They aren't cheap, but they are nice. That is what I am going to build my next tactical style rifle on. Jesse.

Defiance Machine offers an extended front end on all their actions. I had them do that for a short action that I use as an any/any rifle in long range competition. So, you can give Glen a call and get exactly what you want.
