I'cw been using the Nikon 70-300mm VR but don't like the variable aperture.

I've been reading the reviews of the Sigma 100-300 f4 and the same lens with f2.8 aperature and while the comments have been generally favorable the truth is they're mixed mostly due to quality control issues -- any real world experience?
