Best time for pics with soft shadows and lighting is in the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset.

If I'm stuck indoors during a good "Golden Hour", I get like a caged Ferret.
Till my Girl says "Just get your camera and bugger off OK!"
And don't give up at Sunset, the light just after can be amazing as well.
