Is it worth upgrading from a D200 to a D300 Nikon?

Yes, mike, without question.

I have used both, and the D300 seems be leagues ahead of the D200.

My suggestion is that you use only Nikon lenses with VR. The results are well worth the extra cost.

Started with Nikons some 40 years ago and all of the film cameras I have from them have never had so much as a hiccup! All still in use. Lenses have been modified to work the the digital. I love the f1.8 85mm lens for available light.

I bought a D90 recently and am very satisfied. The body is plastic, so probably less robust than a D300, but the picture quality doesn't suffer. Here's a review:

It's really just like any other piece of equipment. If you need and can use the new or improved capabilities then it makes sense. In digital equipment new is ALWAYS better to the reviewers. I personally continue to use D1x's and feel they will probably full fill my needs for the rest of my days. The only real advantage the D2x or the D3x have is better battery life. I have found that higher pixel count does not necessarily relate to better pictures and true top quality images can only really be acheived thru post processing which is a completely different wad of worms. I still have an F3 film camera which is capable of doing pro quality work but again depends on the film processing as much as the in camera work. Lenses are another story entirely and the latest and best are all most always the better in the long run. Personally I would look at lense purchase upgrades rather than necessarily a new body. In handling I find little improvement between a D200 and a D300.

Body upgrade turned out not to be possible within my budget but was able to add an 18-200 VR II lens.

D200 has pretty much replaced the motor driven F2 that I used for quick stuff. I still like those old AI lenses for quality.

I still have Hassy film cameras and a Cambo 4x5 view camera for high quality work.

Oh well.

I envy you the new lense. That's exactly the range I am missing that I would like to own. Good luck and great pleasure with it.
