Foot hold trap recommendation
Ignorance vs. stupidity.

I don't consider myself to be stupid,
but when it comes to trapping I'm definitely ignorant.

So with that in mind.....

I snare hogs quite a bit, but have yet to catch a coyote or fox in one of my hog snares (not that I've tried). Been thinking about starting to try some foot hold traps for fox and coyote as something else to do at my lease. Could any of ya'll recommend a brand, size and supplier of traps for a newbie?

Glenn, years ago when I trapped, I used Victor # 1-1/2 coil spring traps. I ordered them from O.L. Butcher, but I suspect that business is long gone now...

Coyotes were relatively easy to trap, but it would take a bit of explanation to tell you how I did it. In addition to the traps, I used gland lure, decaying meat, and coyote urine. The actual setting of the trap took a bit of time, and some attention to detail in order to not leave human scent.

And the only time I ever trapped a fox was in a set I made for raccoon. I caught a pair over the course of the weekend and decided then they were so pretty they were worth more alive than the $25 the buyer offered for the green pelts... But that was down here, where we don't have a lot of fox.

If you want to talk about this, send me a PM. Or I will meet you somewhere equidistant for both of us and we can talk about it.

A 1 1/2 coil is fine for fox. Use A # 3 bridger for coyotes. If you want a good all around trap for both you can't beat a MB 550 made by minnisota trapline products.

Mr. Tom has it right. Another site you can check out is Sullivansline.com. I do not find as much clutter there as trapperman

Have fun!

I guess I need to go back and tell all those coyotes I trapped with those 1-1/2s that I apologize for using too small a trap on them!

A 1.5 will work on a yote...but not a Big Northern one.

Big differance between the right tool for the job and a tool that you can make work or get away with.

I used no.4 double long springs here in northern Wis. on yotes But then some are yotes well push 50lbs.

The largest one I weighed was 52lbs.

A 1.5 just to small for big yote.

Try www.fntpost.com for supplies.

Ditto on the #3 Bridgers. Might want to night latch 'em. You might want to check your local regulations on jaw spread and offset jaws. I like double coils and offset jaws. The MB550's are the cadilac though.

You shouldn't have any trouble snaring yotes, 12" loop 12" off the gound is a good start.

It's been a few years but I used Northwoods coil sprung#2's and when I reversed the jaws to offset them I added coils. They are quick and don't get frozen in as easy whitch may not be an issue in Tx. We had some other stuff too, like any hobby, we collected as we went so we had a few long springs, double longs, different brands, etc. But primarily double coil. We trapped coyotes and bobcat. Wolves wern't in the area so we didn't have to be to careful, we rarely caught fox.
If you are snareing pigs when after coyotes your loop is to big. The 12x12 general rule isn't bad but will get you some cougar as well. We started using a little smaller loop with the bottom of it about 8-10" off the ground and crowded the path a little more. Less success overall but less cougars in the snares. I haven't had to deal with pesky pigs but they have a big head, so smaller loop should help I'd think. You may wind up with a foot sometimes still though.
