ScotsGunDeer skins...what do i do
OK, i've got to admit that i've usually discarded the skins when deer stalking.
What do i do if i want to keep them for display, furnishings, etc?
Thanks

HamishGidday ScotsGun,
Once you have skinned the beastie cover the wet side with about 2 - 3 lbs of common salt (for the average sized red deer) and roll it up skin side to skin side with the hair on the outside. Get it to the taxidermist reasonably quickly and you will be very pleasantly surprised.
Don't be miserly with the salt though and make sure that it has even and total coverage.
Happy Hunting

22WRFI would think that in all of Scotland you must have a few commercial tanneries that tan skins. I have all of mine tanned and then I have jackets made out of them at a place called Ubers in Owatonna Minnesota. They do a really nice job of making a nice buckskin jacket.
