I just bought a new (used ) Savage 99F in 308 win. It is a mid 60s era rifle with the tang safety. I own 2 other 99s, both being pre WWII models in all original condition that I use with Iron & peep sights, no scope holes. This 308 99F will be my hunting 99 Anyway.....what are your opinions of the best scope for this gun? A fixed 4x? A low range varaiable? New or used?

I have a Leupold 3X on my 308 99F, and a 1x4 Leupold on my 99EG 250 Savage..They are all I have ever needed....

I have a 99E in .308, which I am going to 'pretty-up' a bit, and this will be my hunting 99 and will wear a Leupold 1-4x. Alternatively, I have considered putting a Burris 4x mini on it but I already have the 1-4x.
