YUMANOld Marlin ??????
I have an old Marlim That i believe is either a model 1881 or 1888. The only markings besides the name on the top of the octogan barrel right in front of the reciever are,40 cal on top of the barrel and a serial no 12341 on the bottom front of the reciever.
Anyone help??

ShofIt was pretty simple to find out some information on your rifle.
I simply typed in "Marlin Rifle Serial Numbers" and came up with several different sites.
According to what I found on armscollectors.com, based on the serial number, your rifle was manufactured or shipped in 1886.
As to whether it's an 1881 or 1888, that's hard to say without decent pictures.

YUMANThanks Shof
I have been searching also the According to Fjestad the 1888 serial numbers started with approx 19560. What physical diferences should I look for that would show in a photo. BTW it has double set triggers.

Alberta CanuckIt appears it must be an 1881...from what I can find by Googling "Marlin Model 1888", the 1888 was only made for one year...in 1888. If yours was made in 1886 it follows that it isn't an 1888.

YUMANAlso the 1988 was only chambered in32, 38, 44, .
The 1881 was chamberes in 32, 38, 40, and 45 cal. This one is a 40 ca. Thanks for the help guys.
