maxman001Re: heavy 400 grain loads for marlin 45/70
It is easily done and surpassed.
Reloader #7
My load is as follows 420 hard cast perfromance Gas check
51 grains of Reloder 7
Starline brass
Rem 9 1/2 LR Primer
seated to 2.50 OAL.
This brings a consistent 2125 fps in my marlin 1895 Cowboy
HOWEVER RECOIL IS ROUGH
*I would HIGHLY recommend you start with a lower charge and SLOWLY work up to 51 grains.
Make sure you and your rifle can handle it.
Good luck

Sauer 150I have only used the Alaska Bullet works 405grs bullets and 350 grs North fork over a proper amount of vv-n-133.
The 350 Bonded NF outpenetrates everything I have tried in 45-70 and is my only hunting load for the 45-70. You can reach about 1900f/s in a 22" barrel without exessive pressure.
I have pressure tested mine using a Oehler 43p. The 1900f/s load has average pressure in the 37-38 000psi range. I have seen 40k + in 450M and 444 so I guess it's safe enough

shrikeIn my 1886 EL I use WW brass, WLR primer, 47 Gr. H4198 under a Rem. 405 Gr. Bullet for about 1875-1900 fps.
I use 44.5 Gr. H4198 under an Alaska Bullet Works 405 Gr. bonded bullet for 1825 fps. With my Lyman receiver sight and AO front post I do about 2 inch groups from the bench.

RMillerThanks for the info guys.
I think it is funny though that I do have some IMR 4198 but every one so far uses H 4198.
I learned with my 458 win and 600 grain barnes bullets, that the two powders are not identical.
