jens poulsenWhat powder brands are available in Russia?.

octaveHi jens poulsen,
Thanks for your reply, getting powder should not be
a problem as I live in Canada.
Cheers Octave.
First get Venturino's book on shooting lever actions.
Making brass is easy; start with 45-70. Run it carefully, not all at once, into a standard 40-65 die. Do not force it all in at once; "milk" it in a little at a time and redistribute the lube with your fingers. If you go to much too fast, you will get dents; there is a "feel" for it. Starline makes brass too, but I already had tons of 45-70 when I started on 40-65s for single shots, in 1990.
As for powders, black powder works well. Most any faster medium burn powder like 4198 or 3031 is good. I use 5744 a lot too.

octaveThe 86 rifle I have is a take down model checking
the serial numbers it was made in 1901.Should this
affect the powder I use?
No but look at your barrel; if it is marked Nickel Steel, then you can go to 30K psi; more or less. If not, then stick with black powder pressures, no matter what powder you use.
Get the book; Venturino lays it all out.

Modern .40-65s are .408 and older ones are often .406 diameter.
