Western Filed made by Marlin

I got this gun from my father inlaw and he got it 30 or more years ago. I know that its made by Marlin but I would like to know if it can be up graded to a better cal. 45/70 or should I just try and buy one I haven't had much to do with levers since I was a kid and might like to get a big bore just to play with.

It would be a lot cheaper to buy a good used Marlin in 45-70.

I have a Western Field Marlin 30-30 that was made in 1966. It is a fine shooter and has handily killed everything shot with it. What do you mean by better caliber? The 30-30 put the big bores in exile for many years.

I have one also, inherited from my Uncle. The rifle means more to me because of where (or more accurately WHO) it came from than what it will ever be worth in real dollars.

My suggestion would be to leave it alone, and enjoy it for what it is. Your Father in Law thought enough of you to give it to you, in my book, that means something.

You could always look for a matching one in 35 Remington, or an older used Marlin in 375 Win or 45-70 to play with also. It would probably cost more to change yours than it would to find another whole rifle and buy it outright.

Just my 2 cents worth, and you probably over paid for that advice.
