Re: 1920 savage 99c in .243????
I must have given the wrong s/n. This is NOT a parts gun ray, thank you very much for your opinion. There is a gun just like mine on an auction sight. The model is a Savage 99C series A. THis would make it a newer model i'm sure.

AtkinsonYes that would make it a 1970s gun...
It is either a 99A or a 99C..The A has a schenable forend and no checkering with a 20 inch barrel...
The C is a standard Savage rifle with a 22 inch barrel, it is a plebian model of the time, a meat and potatoes rifle,,
Both were excellent rifles, that met a demand of the time....
It is a 99c series A. The rifle is very nice and for sale.

I'm just speculating but where on the rifle did you get the serial number? Older 99s usually had a serial number on the bottom of the trigger guard as well as on a barrel. Is that where you got the number? if your rifle didn't have a barrel serial number, is it possible that an older 99 was rebarrelled to 243? Just asking and I'm sure someone could comment on whether it was possible. (perhaps a 250/3000 being rebarrelled? or wasn't the 250 available in 1920? - although I can't imagine why anyone would want to switch from that fine caliber if it was)

AtkinsonYour serial number indicates the gun was made in 1920 if you omit the E....It could be one of the first E models in which case it would be a solid frame with a 20, 22 or 24 inch barell, but was only made in 22 Hi-power, 30-30, 303, in 20 inch barrels and in 250-3000 and 300 Sav. in 24 inch barrels...All other models in that time span were in 30-30, 303 and 300 Savage...
Apparantly your gun has been rebarreled...
The 243 came out in 1955 in .308, 243 and 300 Savage in 1955 and in the 99EG, 99RS, and 99R, all post war guns....
If you send me a photo, I can tell you real quick what you have and/or describe it to me in detail, location of safty, brass carrier or aluminum; checkering, shape of butt stock and forearm, and all the markings on the gun....
