Takedown-switchbarrel ?
This may be a silly question...I don't know a lot about lever action Winchesters...but could a '92 Winchester, originally in 44-40 be made into a takedown with barrels in 38-40 and 45 Long Colt?

Good question. I would think as long as the parent case was the same function/feeding would be ok. I am not sure how the .45 Colt would work. I have a Win. M53 take-down in .25-20 and have thought it would be really fun to have barrels in .32-20 and .218 Bee. I have to wonder if Winchester ever made up any multi-caliber sets? If anyone would know it would probably be Turnbull?

38-40 and 44-40 would be easy. 44-40 and 44 magnum would be workable too. 45 Colt, maybe.

2 more barrels, 2 more mag. tubes, 2 more matching forends and caps. It is only money, right? It would probably be cheaper to just find 2 more rifles in the desired cals. and 'borrow' the parts.

Here you go. A little bigger than the 92 but it can be done.

Anything can be done if you have the bucks..

Take downs are pointless, If you get one you will discover they have nothing to offer from a hunting aspect in that you never have to right barrel installed at the right time..In your case the 45 colt covers the other two under most any circumstance and at a great cost..

My favorite was a Brno in 7x57 and 9,3x62 and I seem to see a trophy bull buff or elephant every time I had the 7mm on for example..

Just my personal opine nothing more.. rotflmo

Yes, except for people living in countries with weird laws on how many guns they can own, I don't see much point in switch-barrel rifles, for the reasons Ray mentioned.

Since trains and bicycles went out of fashion for transport to shooting grounds, I'm a bit cool on takedowns of any type, for that matter. A buddy uses them for storage beneath car seats but that doesn't appeal to me considering loss of rigidity likely in the total assembly.

I found same can be said for two rifles.
The one that is perfect cartridge for the game in front of you is back in the lodge.

I appreciate all the replies and all the usual reasons why a switch barrel is not perfect, but to be honest, my main reason for building this is actually the pure mechanical side, being able to make something like this. As I said in a previous post, when I bought this rifle, my intention was to build a full custom firearm ...my question was about the strength of this action to take a 45 Long Colt round.
No disrespect intended by this comment.

Want to is a good reason as any.
I think most on this forum the practical reason for a rifle is long past.
I have a 270-308. Because it is what I want.

The 45 colt is a a good round for a 92 Win. The action is strong enough. I apologize in that I did not interpret this in your post

The 50/110 case and 45/70 case are vastly different. I’d like to know how the one shell carrier worked with both cases.

Good question Jeffe, but the 38 special and the 357 both work in a win 92 or Marlin comes to mind?
as that is accomplished with a common carrier..

I would say that two rifles are good in Ray's African context because you can often get a gunbearer or skinner to carry one of them.

Or have them both at least in the truck..been pretty well time proven..
