Brng. Mod. 71 Bolt Peep
Brng. Mod. 71 Bolt Peep
Checked with Mr. Turnbull's operation recently and obtained source for subject sight. Firm is known as Frontier Americana in Fargo,ND. Phone is 701 241 4440
Turnbull's people think highly of the group, good enough for me, and spoke with them and turnaround time is about 3 weeks. They would prefer you send them just the bolt but you can send them the entire rifle if you don't want to disassemble yourself. They can also do the same sight system on the 95 at a bit more money due to additional machining. The sight is an exact reproduction other than there is no inscription on the sight. Just rec'd NIB Browning 71, but will have to wait to recharge my batteries before buying the sight.

sroseThat is great to hear. I've always wanted a bolt peep on my 71's. So how much is it for the sight and installing?
The sight itself is 150.00 and installation is 325.00 or a total of 475.00. The 95 would be somewhat more?? but not sure how much more. Seems a bit high, but to me everything is high.
I just got my Brng. 71 and it has fairly nice wood on it and after I send it off to be checkered I will most likely go ahead with the sight job. I do understand these folks do first class work and it would really make for a first class 71.

sroseThanks, Wow $325 to install? I wanted one but not that bad. I'll have to stick to a Lyman or an XS.
srose,
I know what you mean, it is on the pricey side. Had a 71 years ago and it had the Williams FP sight on it and until I scrounge some extra cash, will go with another one of those. Planning on sending stocks to be checkered in the old Winchester F pattern in a week or so.

Bob Nisbet$150!!
Goodness, I am amazed.
I wanted a bolt peep sight for my model 71, but could not justify what an original costs these days, so I reverse engineered an original and created a set of drawings. Then
I made a complete sight for my model 71. I now know how much work is involved. I have even made a few replacement parts for folks.
I have seen the original complete sights sell on eBay for upwards of $350.
If they are actually selling them for $150, that is a bargain! I heard recently that an elevation screw alone on eBay sold for over $100.

Jim M.How close to the original is the one from Frontier Americana? I am interested in a bolt peep on my Winchester model 1892. Am I correct to assume the bolt peep will be easier for me to shoot the 92 since I am a trifocal glass wearer?
Thanks!
Jim
Jim M,
When I spoke with these folks I asked that question as to originality and was told exact copy other than there is no inscription/writing on the sight. I thought the price of the sight alone was very reasonable, but the 'smith work was quite high, but I do not know all the work they have to do on the bolt itself, so took their word for it.

Bob NisbetWork to install a bolt mounted 98A type Winchester peep sight:
All machining must be high precision, typically holding tollerances of 2 ten-thousandths or better.
Mounting requires cutting two lengthwise slots in the top of the bolt, then
Drill two vertical holes, one for the elevation screw and the other for the elevation spring, then
From the bottom, cut a receptacle hole for the hidden elevation screw nut, then
Drill a hole crosswise through the bolt to hold the sight base pivot pin.
Some other efforts are also required, but the above is where most work occurs.

Bob NisbetElevation of the bolt peep is around one-quarter inch vertical from when elevation of sight base is bottomed touching the bolt.
