Federal 338R in BB 94
I have a Big Bore 94 action, that's how I got it.
Question was, what to do!?
Then, an epiphany!! 307 necked up to 338. Ouala! A rimmed 338 Federal, in a compact, fast handling rifle.
A "tamed" wildcat. Factory dies, reloading manuals (albeit milder). This could work.
I just have to phone my 'smith.

It's easy enough to do. I did something similar but in 375 cal. Not sure what bullets you have in mind but Woodleigh make a couple in 338 suitable for use in a tube mag.

Why not make it a 356 Winchester???

I vote 375 Winchester. If you made it into some kind of a 338/307 wildcat, I'm not sure if anyone makes flat point 338 bullets. It'd stink if you couldn't load up the magazine because of pointy bullets.

That is why I suggested the 356 Win.

It is a factory cartridge with suitable bullets, and is the one of the most powerful rounds for the Winchester Mod 94 Big Bore reciever...

You guys never heard of the 338 Marlin Express???You cannot load a 307 based cartridge to 338 federal pressures because it has way thicker brass than a 308.You could not load it to even come close to a 338ME.Waste of time because it improves nothing. popcorn

338 ME is very cool, but, I'm pretty sure it won't fit in a Big Bore 94. If I'm wrong everything is moot and game on with the 338ME.
However, the .532 case head has been used and could make for a lively assortment.

Thanks though. All input is appreciated.

I do not know what the max head case size would be on a Big Bore action, but I do the Winchester has been made in 444 Marlin, but the rim of the 45/70 is aparently too large.

I am not big on Wildcats, but it would seem that you could do a 375 JDJ [375/444], or a 338/444.

I have a 356 and have always wondered what the 348 x bullet would do in that case. I cannot believe that i would even consider the "obsolete" 348 bullet Smiler The 348 was always predicted to die but it still hangs on and the 338 Marlin will hardly be remembered. But that x 348 bullet would be interesting

I do believe that it will fit. The overall length will be just fine and I believe the rim will be ok too. I have big bores in .307 and 444 marlin. They are a very fine version of the 94!

Thanks! That would open a whole new world for me!! A 45-70 is my favorite lever cartridge. The loadings are mild to wild.
I've owned 3 Marlins, XLR, Standard and GBL. Even owned a Rossi Rio Grande. The Marlins were well made, my personal favorite being the GBL. 405 grain Buffalo Bore Ammo was a treat shoot. The Rio Grande had an annoying trait of jamming. I was always looking for the feel of Dad's 30-30 94.
This build will be fun!

Another vote for the 356win, with the 200gr Hornady flex tip you can load a pointed bullet with much better B.C. than round or flat nose bullets.....should be good for 250yds or so......

Or you could make it a two shooter and have the whole range of 338 bullets as an option. I never seem to hit anything with the third round anyway.
