I know this isn't walnut. Anybody have an idea what it is? Bought this gun used for $250. As soon as I saw the wood I knew it was going to be mine. mine.

Pun intended, brasilwood.
That was the generic name in Europe for centuries, it belongs to a class of woods that come in several varieties.
I've travelled extensivly in Brasil, and have seen some beautiful moldings and furniture made with this wood.

It has a distinctive smell, when fresh cut. I've followed truckloads of it in rough lumber form, while travelling in Rio Grande do Norte.

It that the factory finish? If it is, you might consider refinishing it. You will be amazed. My wife gave me one for Christmas several years ago, and I tried wiping down the stock with a degreaser to remove what I thought was the cosmoline-like coating all over the rifle. Guess what? It also stripped the finish from the stock, forcing me to refinish the whole thing before I ever got to fire it.

Afterward, I was very happy with the results and was thankful for the accident.

An interesting grain/color pattern! How tough is this wood? Could it be used for a bolt-action stock?
