470 Turnbull

Doug Turnbull470 Turnbull
I have made a new cartridge for the Marlin 95. It is basically a 450 alaskan blown out. No mod on the loading gate and very little on the ejection port. Balistically about 2000 FPS with a 400 grain bullet.
The 475 Turnbull will not fit into a 95 so here is one that will work just great.

D99Nothing like shameless self promotion!
I am day dreaming about doing your 475 on an 1886 or 71.
What would you charge to install a new barrel and sights, and make it all work? I saw you built some with short barrels, what was recoil like in this cartridge?
I am trying to find a Browning 71 or 1886 to send over. Not too fond of the legally retarded Winchesters.

AmmohouseThat should definately pack a whallop!
I just wish I wasn't so poor!
I haven't even finished reading about the 475 in Rifle magazine yet!

billinthewildI enjoyed talking to you in Reno and could not get over the quality of your rifles. Makes me tempted to send you the receiver of my Marlin
guide gun for color case hardening. Keep up the good work.

High CountryIsn't that the same cartridge Reeder came out with 4 or five years ago on the same firearm platform. He calls it the .476 GNR.

Doug TurnbullNew barrel fit finished and mods completed run about $1300.
Recoil is about 40 ft/lbs with a 400 gr at 2200 and a 9.5 # rifle. 60 ft/lbs in a 7# gun, not bad to shoot.
Any of the brownings will work great.
I have Barnes working on a 400 TS and banded solids for this caliber specific. Hope to get them in the near future.

Thom DlGood work! I'm glad to see you are covering the 95s also.
I don't get why the 475 Turnbull won't work in the 95, though. The 50-110 does so why won't the shorter smaller caliber 475?

Doug TurnbullIf you can get the 50-110 to work than you can get the 475 to work I just dont have the experience to get it to work in that action. Have not played with it the way we have with the 1886. I am sure that there is some one out there that has and will rework the action to make the longer cartridge feed reliably.
The 470 needs very mininal alteratins to feed and load.

Just because David Clay had an experimental Marlin 1895 chambered for the 50-110 WCF doesn't mean it works. He abandoned the idea when he could not get the cartridge with most bullet configurations he tried to cycle reliably.

Doug TurnbullThe other problem with trying to get the 475 Turnbull to work is the fact of the shoulder on it. It does not feed well and it hits the chamber at the same time the bolt hits the hammer. this cereates undue pressure. That is why I made the 470 version. it is 2.050 case and the shoulder is really minimal. It feeds into the mag with little to not mods and it may not need any ejection port work either. It is really a great mod of a cartrige into 475 caliber and you will also be able to ust teh new Barnes bulets that I am working with them on for the 475 Turnbull.
I believe that you will run into the same shoulder problems with the 450 alaskan as I did when I tried the 475 Turnbull as the shoulder and the bolt/hammer hit a nd add pressure.
