Re: Marlin 1895 - 45-70 Recoil
I own a 1895 in the 22" barrell.Shoot 300 gr sierras at 2170 fps.The recoil and head bumps at 2100 were bruttle, but when I found I lost accuracy loading down,I loaded up,and get even more head bumps.Man from zero to 150 just point and shoot, and lterally watch the fur fly.Yeehaa.

Check the latest Hodgon manual. Hodgdon lists a load that goes up to 2000 fps with a 400g bullet. I get nearly 1800 fps with the STARTING charge of H4198 in the level 2 (Marlin loads) from their book.

note: Their web site only lists trapdoor loads. Send me a PM if you want the load data.

More like 1600 for what I've used thus far but I'm not focusing on jacketed bullets so I guess I just got used to looking at another set of numbers. I think real world numbers will be 15-1600. The problem I've seen on those bullets in the past is that they disintigrate on impact with minimal penetration. Don't get me wrong. I've seen a LOT of dead deer from theese. My dad used them for years in a Ruger 44. I just prefer a bullet that will shoot through a animal. I'm definately a 44 fan. I will be ordering a box of those BB +p's to try....why ? Just because.
